One of the people in my extended circle of friends is originally from Canberra. His mother and family all lost their homes. He mentioned that the 200 acre pine forest near his old house is gone which really made him sad. I doubt he will ever go back home though since his family may find out about his subversive porn career.
Damnation…now the fires ARE threatening my mum’s immediate region. Stanley got burned last night and now they are heading towards Yackandandah (where me mum lives). The cars are packed and they are ready to go at a moments notice, apparently all the roads around them have been closed anyway, so I don’t know where they’d go if they were evacuating.
It’s scary stuff. I got a sms from a friend this morning saying that they could see flames from their house, and the fires were moving towards them (Victorian fires).
I hope your mum is OK kambuckta.
Well, I don’t know whether my mum is in some sort of denial or what, but there are fires less than 1 km away and she is still hanging out at home.
Mind you, they are on a grazing property and the real bush is at least 200 mtrs away on one side, and the other side has a road between them and the dense gum-trees (they’re on the Beechworth-Wodonga Rd for anybody who’s following the news). It would only be embers and/or fireballs that would ignite the house, and they have it very well damped-down, so I guess it could be OK to stay and try to fight any outbreaks that occur. God, I hope so anyway.
Have been thinking of your Mum all day kambuckta and hoping that she continues to stay safe. All the best, and please keep us posted.
Judas!
He switched codes.
Thinking of your Mum, kambuckta. Yackandandah’s not the greatest place to be, but I have a fair bit of faith in the CFA. This is looking like it’s going to be a long haul, as bad as it’s been in Vic since Ash Wednesday. I heard on the news of a fire spotting 6k ahead of its front yesterday. Scary stuff.
No he didn’t.
Woolly was raised and schooled down on the Victorian border, is afflicted with a birth defect called “Geelong supporteritis” and didn’t know ARL existed until his mid teens.
There was a report that burning embers from the Duffy fires in Canberra were landing in Queanbeyan over 15km away. While the outlook is ominous, most of the weather so far this week has been much milder than the forecasts. With a bit of luck and if that continues then containment work has a chance.
