I understand the certain vibe you are going for with ‘Bushtapo’, but it sounds way too much like ‘El Guapo’, which isn’t much of a insult for us players.
Amazingly enough, I haven’t been able to sustain that peak intellectual level in every post I write here.
Since it’s come up a coupla times lately, yes, I earned a doctorate in math, a decade or so back. But it’s been awhile now since I was a practicing mathematician, and unless a math question is in my specialty field (graph theory and combinatorics), I’m happy to see Orbifold or ultrafilter or any of several other more mathematically adept posters here handle it; they can run rings around me, most days.
Not that it matters much. Aside from times when expertise in a particular field is germane to a debate, degrees don’t matter much here. If you can cite facts and make solid arguments, it doesn’t matter whether you’re a Ph.D. from Hahvahd or a high-school dropout. And the Ph.D. won’t save your butt around here if you can’t.
As far as what I do now, iampunha was in the right ballpark. I’m a government statistician, but don’t make too much of that, either. One can qualify for the job with only six hours of stats courses above the freshman level, as long as one has a boatload of math to go along with it. And that’s pretty much my story. I’ve learned a bit of statistics on the job, but most of what I do doesn’t require a solid stats background, so much as it requires the ability to research the occasional problem when the job demands it. Anyone who’s got a bachelor’s in stats from an accredited college undoubtedly knows more statistics than I do.
I don’t know why the recent curiosity about my credentials in threads that have nothing to do with math or stats, but there they are, if anyone really cares. Right now, I sure don’t.
If I ruled the world (and god knows nobody wants that) any one who refered to George Bush by anything but, President Bush, George Bush or Mr. Bush would suffer testicular humilation that would put Iraqi prison camps to shame.
Same goes for people who woud refer to Senator John Kerry as anything but Mr. Kerry, Senator Kerry or Presidential candidate Kerry.
While I am at it I prefer to be called His high exalted master, or simply snookums.
