Well that was a hour out of my life that I’ll never get back.
What a piss poor speech from Bush. More bullshit about 9/11. More lies about Iraq. If you don’t hate fags you’re not a conservative. [Security beats down a non-violent protester] More tax cuts for the obscenely wealthy. Women don’t have a right to control their own bodies. Lie about John Kerry. Smirk a lot. Exploit “the troops” while avoiding mentioning that you’re responsible for the deaths of 1000 of them. Whine about imaginary “unborn” babies while setting real children on fire and blowing their limbs off in Iraq. Lie about John Kerry some more. Spew stupid platitudes about “freedom.” Invoke Godwin. Trot out that fucking stupid-ass line about how “terrorists hate our freedom.” Conflate terrorism with the invasion of Iraq. Pretend that the world is grateful for your warmongering. Acknowledge some endearing “flaws” to appear self effacing (“I swagger…I’m too blunt”). Don’t acknowledge the real flaws (like you’re a smirking, grandiose, incompetent, arrogant prick). Point at your seahag mother for a cheap applause line. Exploit the pathos of dead and wounded soldiers but don’t acknowledge that they are dead and wounded only because of your own lies. Quote Pete Seeger, blather about a "calling from the stars. Takes God’s name in vain. End speech.
Did I miss anything. Did he say anything intelligent, or thoughtful? Did he take responsibility for anything?
Now it’s time for Fox News to gush about it.
This was probably the worst acceptance speech I’ve ever heard at a major party convention.
They’re creaming themselves on MSNBC. I mean, really getting off. Best speech he’s ever given, etc. I wasn’t at all impressed, but my hatred of the man prevents me from making an honest assessment, so that’s all I can say.
That speech was hardly the worst acceptance speech ever, because while he said nothing of substance you have the previous four years to go off of to make your judgment.
No, the worst speech ever was the “Hi, I’m John Kerry, and I served in Vietnam. I don’t have a plan for anything at all, but remember that HELP IS ON THE WAY! Hey, didn’t I look good in a uniform? By the way, I was in Vietnam…”. It was the worst speech ever because it had no substance, just a bunch of platitudes and promises, thus confirming beyond any shadow of a doubt that Kerry’s strategy consists of “Anybody but Bush” and “Let’s hope he blows his own foot off”.
The conventions are meaningless anyway. We knew months ago who the nominees were, so they were just giant wankfests with no really discernible purpose other than inertia.
How about them protestors, huh? Balls of steel (metaphorical ones if some of them were female, I really couldn’t tell.) I think it was a war thing, although I couldn’t hear what they were saying, just the delegates saying “Go! Go!”. Dubya handled it pretty well.
Overall, though, it was just bland and kinda shallow. I know, I know, now everybody’s all  but that’s my impression.
I’ve started a GD thread about the speech, just letting folks here know.
Diogenes, can’t you at least consider that your view of the is just a* wee bit* colored by your political convictions and not the actual merit of the speech? I sure as heck am not going to put out any review of Kerry’s speeches with out a few self-acknowledging qualifiers.
I was watching Kerry’s little rebuttal speech from wherever he is. He mentioned something about having been to Vietnam. Is this true? Has anybody heard about this before?
This says that Fillmore, Pierce, and Buchanan failed to be renominated by their own party.
[quote]
“Realizing this is almost not on topic, but has there ever been a circumstance where an incumbent president has LOST the party nomination?”
Yes, but not since the 1800s. Millard Fillmore was not renominated by the Whig party (which was fine with him), and Franklin Pierce, who followed him in the office, was not renominated by the Democrats, and neither was the fellow who followed HIM, James Buchanan. That’s a run of three presidents not renominated by their respective parties – nearly 7% of all US presidents!
I’m not sure if that’s all of them, because until the 22nd Amendment there was no term limits, and I’m not sure whether anyone lost a bid for a third term, nor do I have the inclination to look really hard to see if there are other cases. I took a cursory glance and it was a mess, so good luck if you want to look.
