I left Emigsville (just north of York) a little before noon, to take a service call in Gettysburg. Normal transit is ~1/2 hour one way. 15 minutes on job, 3.75 hours on route 30. The real irony is I’m a relief snow plow driver for PennDOT. They haven’t made my phone ring once this season.
Well, at least I got to have my planned St. Patty’s Day debauchery with my female friend. The plows came through Middletown shortly after I wrote the OP.
Unfortunately, my friend lives in Hummelstown. Good God. As of 9PM, they hadn’t even touched the square!
I guess it’s not PennDOT, but the municipalities who are to blame.
On Wednesday it took me 30 minutes to walk 4 miles.
Today it took me 40 minutes to walk the 1/2 mile to my office.
On yesterday’s news one person said her St. Patrick’s Day was ruined because she couldn’t get a plane to Boston and had to celebrate it in New York City.
Well, the aftermath isn’t nearly as bad as it could have been. I managed to dig my car out with no problem, although the doors were frozen shut. Once I got in and got it started, it took no time to get the ice and stuff off.
The smaller surface streets are not all that great, because the borough has been sending out trucks to spread whatever it is they spread out. So the snow is now ice and slush because of the impact of the trucks. Thanks, guys. Hanover and High are good, though, so it’s not all bad. And I’m sure a lot of it will be gone soon because it’s supposed to warm up gradually with no new precipitation.

The plows have been by, making passes all last night and into this morning. The main street on which I live isn’t too bad–more slush now than anything else. Of course, my car is parked on the main street, which means every time a plow comes by, more of that lovely slush gets pushed towards my car.
Hallboy spent the morning digging us out–he managed to do the sidewalk and my car, bless his pre-teen heart. I went out for a bit and dusted off the car, although I haven’t ventured anywhere yet. After being cooped up in the house all day (or at least FEELING like I’ve been couped up all day), we may venture out this evening and grab a bit to eat that I don’t have to cook or clean up after.
…I wonder if the new Chili’s will be packed?..
I hope my boss got to work okay this morning. As usual we have a tight deadline and there’s a ton of things to be done by Monday afternoon, so the fact that we were ordered to leave a half hour early yesterday resulted in him practically having kittens. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone more high-strung.
I’m not sure exactly how much snow we’ve gotten so far. Between 5 and 8 inches, I’d guess, considering the depth I was shoveling a little while ago. I hope we don’t get another 10 like they were predicting yesterday.
Any Harrisburgers been downtown (specifically around the Capitol) yet? We’re supposed to go to something at the Brownstone tonight and I’m worried about the street parking. How’s it look?
My new guy came through at 3:30 am !!!
Did a lovely job. I park the cars on the grass so the driveway is totally clear, that way we can be plowed fully. 300 foot driveway that flares about 5 car-widths wide near the house. Otherwise, they plow the cars IN.
He was great, came back, got paid with a tip and my thanks. My son and his pal did a sleep-over in the family room, which is just inside the garage doors. The thunk-thunk-grind-grind of the plow blade being dropped and pushed a dozen times woke them up. Or… kept them up. Teenagers. 3:30 am is nothing to them.
Digging the cars out was not so bad. It’s warm enough that the heat INSIDE from sunlight making it through the side windows allowed me to slough off huge chunks of thick heavy snow at once.
Glad it happened last night. Tomorrow at 5:00 am I’m up and driving into NYC for work. That woulda sucked.
Sorry to those who had their parade plans blown by this- that truly sucks.
jayjay, I drove through downtown this afternoon and it looked fine. They did some plowing and it looks like there’s on street parking. Roads are fine (and dry for the most part). Be safe.
Eh. We decided to stay home anyway. I’m always timid about giving up the parking space after these damn storms. I want a big old sign that says “This space is MINE! I dug it out. Go dig your own, ya lazy bum!”
Overheard yesterday in NYC, on Houston St.: "I hate snow that hurts.
If you didn’t have an umbrella, you got scoured with little stones of ice. Bogus!
One of my coworkers was dancing about last Tuesday, saying, “Yay, spring is here, winter’s gone forever!” I told him to shut up, and he wouldn’t listen.
So yesterday I informed him that I blamed him for the weather.
In my neighborhood, those signs are called “chairs”. The local junk shop apparently does a thriving business in these during the winter.
Robin
I know that’s the standard, but it’s so TACKY. I refused to do it after the last storm. I’m continuing to refuse.
We had to go the chair route during the Valentine’s Day storm. We (well, Airman) dug out spaces for a few cars, but we have neighbors who see no reason to dig out spots for themselves, let alone clear their sidewalks until they get cited.
This time around, the snow softened so quickly that I didn’t need to dig spaces, so no chairs.
Robin
I’m sure I’m not the only one hearing this, but outside the packed snow is falling off roofs with alarming thuds. (We’re in the city, some of the houses are three or four stories high once you factor in the attic spaces.) Of course, it might be fair payback to all those hoodlums who elect to cut through my back yard instead of walking around the block like they’re supposed to do. I mean, I’m the third house from the corner–how hard is it to walk THREE MORE YARDS and go around the block instead of unlatching my alley gate, walking through my still full of snow back yard and around the still full of snow side of my house, down my still somewhat icy steps to the street?
Get outta my yard!
Oh, and Hallboy and I have an amazing dance we do with the trashcan, the car, and the parking space each time we leave/come home.
I hate winter…
