A quick question for all the astronomers out there:[ul]How do I locate the star, Sirius, in the night sky? I know how to find the constellation Orion, but don’t know the names of any of the stars therein (nor nearby) except Betelgeus.[/ul]

Sirius isn’t in Orion, it’s in Canis Major. It’s the really bright star to the south of Orion. Check this month’s star chart at the Sky & Telescope web site.
I just went outside and, after a little looking about, found Sirius just above the local horizon. It doesn’t look very bright, but there may be haze obscuring it. I’ll look again later once it’s risen a bit.
Once again, thanks!

You can’t miss Sirius, it sparkles. It’s the bright star that flashes green, red, and blue. It’s my favorite star.
