Buuuuurrrrrrrnnnniiiiiiiigggggg Mmmmmaaaaaannnnn!!!!!

Why not?

I’ve had the opportunity a couple of times to go to Burning Man and I did not, for these reasons:

  1. No desire to spend hard-earned vacation in what are to me extremely uncomfortable accommodations.

  2. No desire to spend vacation in such an inaccessible and hard-to-get-to area (if I’m going to fly and drive for 15 hours, I’m going to a Greek island and having someone serve me day and night).

  3. No desire to be around 40,000 stinky, smelly, sweaty, unwashed, pot-smoking, drunk, high people who make a kind of art (or “art,” in some cases) that I’m not interested in.

  4. I hate being outside in the heat getting all sweaty, with no way to de-sweatify. Ick x 1,000.

  5. The thought of being covered with salt residue for a week makes me ill.

  6. The thought of being forced to look at so many naked people, who I would not choose to look at any other time, is not appealing. Yes I can look away but come on, it’s impossible to avoid them all.

  7. The thought of having to use public portable toilets for a week is revolting.

As you can see, BM is not “my” thing. Yet so many people LOVE it. Is it really as uncomfortable, sweaty, stinky, salty, and high-on-pot as I think?

Me too. But I’m such a city boy, that I’m afraid to go without someone very experienced.

Because its so “anti-commercialization”, and stuff.

Like someone said earlier, “It ain’t what it used to be”. Yeah, free.

Uncomfortable. Well sorta. It is hot and windy, and dust is a constant presence. But for the most part it wasn’t that uncomfortable this year. The wind was (with a couple of extreme exceptions) a welcome breeze. Even when it did blow hard it was generally easy to find a tent to duck into and someone to visit with while you waited it out.

Sweaty. Sorta. You could sure break a sweat easy enough. But at 5%ish humidity you stayed dry.

Stinky. I didn’t notice any BO at all. Keeping clean took a little work but it seemed like most of the folks there had planned ahead and managed the trick

Salty. Not at all. It’s alkalai, not salt (though for all I know alkalai may be a form of salt). But there is a lot of it.

High-on-pot. I only saw a handfull of people that were obviously high or drunk and none of them were obnoxious. There was just too much to do and see to spend your time blotto.
