Buying a Prepared Turkey in Chicago?

Hey everyone, I was hoping some of you would have some suggestions for places to buy a prepared Turkey from for Thanksgiving here in Chicago. So far my only idea is Whole Foods which does prepared meals, but frankly I think it’s a bit over priced and we don’t care about stuff like “organic” birds. I’ve been trying to find ideas online (I assumed the newpapers would have promos and stuff) but so far my search has left a bit to be desired.

I’m gonna keep looking, but I thought with so many Chicagoans here someone would be able to offer some firsthand advice and direction. Thanks!

Try looking for a smoked turkey, it’s already “cooked” you just have to heat it through. I think they are delicious, but they taste more like ham than turkey.

I’d be willing to wager that Jewel or Dominick’s are selling turkeys and complete dinners in their delis.

Bin 37 had an interesting prepared meal plan: $20 got you a turkey and some interesting sides. That was a per-person price so it might get expensive quickly. I also assume it was part of a turkey and not the entire thing, but if you get enough “orders,” who knows.

I was actuall considering this myself.

Can I assume you mean Bin 36? :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyways, that was one of the ideas I saw listed on Metromix but according to that site the options are uncooked but ready for the oven. It’s not that clear if it’s portioned out or if it’s the whole bird, and it’s kinda moot since their deadline was Noon Sunday.

I’m leaning towards The Goddess and the Grocer in Bucktown. It’s hella expensive, much like Whole Foods, but I’m thinking it would be more gourmet/traditional than Whole Paycheck.

I’d love to find something better than Dominicks/Jewel but cheaper than $75 for a 14 pound bird. Eh, still looking for suggestions. Thanks to those who responded so far.

Omni, did you try Boston Market?

If you want to make the trip, Hecky’s in Evanston is (or at least was) famous for Turkey at Thanksgiving. Usually a local BBQ joint (Motto:“It’s the Sauce!”). People lining up outside to get some. It might be too late, I think you need to pre-order.

I think there’s a branch in Chicago too, somewhere on Halsted.
If you don’t need a whole turkey for presentation purposes, Boston Market would be just fine.

Good suggestions, both. Yes, I do know Hecky’s, they are basically right down the block to me here in Chicago. I may give them a call and see if they are doing Turkeys, and if it’s too late to order one.

I already bit the bullet and ordered a bird from The Goddess and the Grocer, but wouldn’t be opposed to cancelling it for a better option.

I’m curious about Boston Market, I love the food there, but something just feels a little odd about ordering a Turkey from a quasi-fast food franchise.

Incidentally, I just called Hecky’s and they are doing Turkeys at the Chicago locale, and they still will take orders.

One question, they offer a smoked Turkey versus the traditional roasted at the other place. I’ve never had a smoked bird before and I’m curious what everyone’s opinion of them is.

Thanks for the help.
