Buying Gift Card Online To Purchase Items?

Going to be buying a tv online and usually buy stuff off amazon. However, i might get it off bestbuy, newegg or walmart.com.
Normally when i buy stuff, i always just pay by credit card but it seems like many ppl just buy gift card then use it to buy the stuff they want so they pay less. Is this true and does this happen a lot?
Does anyone know generally what sites are best to buy these gift cards? I googled and saw quite a bit of it and many i saw were a few percent discount. So if i want to buy something thats $420 on best buy, i could just buy $400 in gift cards for maybe $20 discount then pay the remaining with credit card?
Does anyone here always buy a gift card when they purchase stuff online at these big online retailers? I didnt know much about this until recently.
Also are these cards 100 percent? I also read amazon gift cards are reversibible but is that true? What about other cards?

I’ve never done it online. I understand there are some sites that give discounts. Sometimes you can get instant ones. I actually buy the gift cards at local stores to use online or at other stores, because I have multiple grocery stores that give free gas or “fuel points.” I get around a $6 discount for every $50 I spend on gift cards locally. So it would probably have to cost less than $88 per $100 to make it worth my while to buy online. I used to sell Amazon giftcards on eBay and I actually sold them for more than face value- I think it had something to do with some people only having paypal to use for online purchases. So they would change their paypal funds into cards they could spend.

Okay so im looking at lot of gift cards such as 50 dollar selling for 48 dollar for a small discount. Im looking to buy something from walmart.com so basically assuming the final cost of the product is say 455.52… then i have to make sure all the gift card i buy is worth 455.52 exactly right assuming i have no intention of buying from there again?
Of course it would show i pay around 18 dollars less total from my credit card but i was bit confused as to this.
Does anyone here used giftcardzen.com? This is where im looking to get like 10 of these walmart cards. Also its mentioned they are printable cards but it said some cards may only be used in store.
So there might be a chance those 10 cards i buy, i cant use all of them online and purchase it? Because there is no walmart near me and obviously if i have to go there, i wouldn’t buy the gift card as i want to buy from walmart.com.
Anyone know about this? Called them but no one picked up there.

I purchased 9 of these walmart cards. I went to apply them online and apparently walmart.com only accept maximum 4 gift cards per order? Does anyone know why they do this?? Now the other 5 gift card i cant even use anymore… Im buying a TV for around 420 dollars and could only use up 210 dollars…

So you saved, what, $8?

Was it worth it?

Saved close to $20 when i purchased all these gift cards.
Obviously its not worth it now as i cant use more than 4 per order. Im basically buying one big tv and cant use all the gift cards so now wasted 250 dollars.

Your rights with online purchasing are best protected by making a purchase only with a credit card.

Can you buy a gift card with a gift card? If so use your cards to buy a more expensive one.

You’re protected in the store as well since most credit cards will extend your warranty.

Or, the OP could just take the gift cards to the store and buy the item, but he seems to be going out of his way to make this more complicated. No offense, but even if it worked, that’s a lot of hoops to jump through to save $20. Also, keep in mind that if you have to return the TV, you’d get your money back in Walmart Gift Cards instead of a refund to your credit card. Another issue is that some random website that no one’s ever heard of now has your credit card information. It might not be an issue, they might be on the up and up, but it’s still one more place in the cloud with your information, your email address (sending you spam), your physical address etc.

Personally, if you were that hard up for the $20, you should have kept an eye on Amazon and Woot and eventually you would have found a better deal.

Okay so apparently my order was shipped and i cannot cancel it anymore. I emailed to cancel it and they said i would receive email if the package was not fully processed. I see its been shipped.
Does anyone know if its fine to refuse delivery for this and then get refunded the gift card balances, then i would use all of them once by combining them to purchase this tv again? Or would that be a huge hassle? I know many ppl return things but of course im doing this b/c i basically wasted 250 dollars for the other gift cards that could not be applied to the tv. I only used up like 185 dollars or so applied due to only being able to use 4 max gift cards only.
I had asked them, could they refund me back my credit card amount i paid and take the other gift cards which i bought specifically to buy this tv and they said they cannot do this.
Would you guys deny delivery then reorder it if you were me? Again, i basically have $250 gift cards total apprxomiately that i will never use b/c its WalMart and i bought all these cards so i could buy that 1 tv only to find out u cant use more than 4 cards per order but it seems like i could combine all the cards to one but not 100 percent sure if i could do this on the phone or not as no WalMart in my state.
The thing is if i do get refund to my gift cards wouldn’t it still take a few weeks to do a refund?
Also about the saving $20, i didnt know about these gift cards until i googled it and thought hey you could say a few percent just buying the gift card for the total amt so i figure buy gift card then apply it to the tv so i figure it was like a coupon in a way and didnt think much of it. I didnt even had any intention of this until i saw an ad for dell gift card then i saw if there were walmart gift card and figure hey say 20 dollars this way.

I thought you lived in New York City?

So i spoke to a CS rep on the phone. They told me i can’t even combine the gift cards i have whether i have 2 gift card or 5 or 9 gift card. This is the opposite of what the person int he email told me. They said i could refuse delivery or return it back and i would get credit back to my gift card and credt card in few days but the thing is i wouldnt be able to combine all the gift cards i have.
Does anyone know what the real answer is on this? Someone mentioned you could combine them at the store but of course i cant do this b/c NY doesnt have a WalMart but this CS said from what he’s reading… u cant do this whether on the phone or at an actual WalMart location.

Yes im in nyc. Theres no walmart in nyc.

If you refuse delivery for an undamaged package you’re going to have to pay for the shipping at least one way. You’d be better off accepting it and using the remaining cards to buy other stuff you need later. Chalk this up as a learning experience.

I paid for shipping for it to arrive to my home. So i would be paying for shipping again when they ship it to me, but the shipping fees are $5 only. Actually if you get free shipping, you don thave to have shipping fees.

If you refuse delivery, who is responsible for the return shipping charges?

You may have paid $5 for “shipping” but that’s not what Walmart paid, the difference is part of the purchase price. When you send it back you’re going to have to pay the actual shipping cost, whatever that is.

Are you sure about this? There was one time i ordered something i dont recall what it was or what site it was, but i told them i was going to refuse delivery and i didn’t get charged anything for it.
Again i rarely have made much returns in all my years of buying online as the item i got rarely had any problems.

What will returning/refusing it get you?

If you refuse shipping and have the thing sent back, you still have $400 worth of gift cards.

If you keep it, then you only have $215 worth of gift cards, and a television. And I guarantee you can find $215 worth of stuff to order from WalMart.com in the next couple months. Which is better than $400 worth of stuff.

Why would they pay for shipping both ways just because you changed your mind?

Why did you pay the difference with a credit card if you didn’t want to?

Why didn’t you cancel it before it shipped?

Take some responsibility for your actions.

The phrase penny wise pound foolish comes to mind here.

The guideline I always heard was, if spending the time and effort saves you money at your normal hourly wage, its worth it. If you make $20/hr and you spent an hour on phone calls and filling out forms, ordering gift cards, etc to save that $20, ok fine. If you spent 3-4 hours you would probably have been happier just paying the $20 as your time/effort netted about $5/hr.
