Buying new HVAC system?

Sadly my electric company is the town so they don’t do anything other than collect money. No rebates, tax credits ,etc. They get power from Duke energy. The rates are higher so they can skim off part of the money and claim they have lower taxes.

Getting a Trane system , Carrier can’t get me one until January . Not sure my current unit can last that long.

Installed on Monday 15 SEER

It was actually installed today due to rain Mon. I thought they would install in pieces but it was all 1 unit when they installed it. Even gave me a new concrete pad for it to sit on. Way better than my old piece of crap. Probably replace the smaller upstairs unit next fall if it lasts that long.

We installed a whole new AC/furnace system last summer, we are in Houston the old system blower fan died in August, so we were in emergency mode to get it fixed. The whole system ( blower Furnace compressor the outside compressor/condenser thingy etc was all cobbled together from different manufacturers parts which had all been replaced piecemeal. Anyway we had a couple of different companies come around with various options and they all tried various screwy math to show I would recouple the cost in a few years .
Fortunately I track that stuff as it helps pick electricity plans and providers by having some graphs of monthly consumption, and we were at about 800-1000 kWh baseload for lights, cooking etc as the furnace is gas for heating in winter (ok houston winter) . That said it used to hit 3,500 kWh per month in the summer but even then unless the high end multi stage expensive unit reduce our cost to zero it would still be forever until it made sense to go with the high end unit. So we opted for the dual stage option which is noticeably more efficient than the single stage units. It will still be close to the ending of the universe through proton before the 15K it all cost would pay itself back through electricity savings, but the dual stage felt right. FWIW we used (on a 3,200 sq ft house) 22,000 kWH in 2018 and down to 15,500 kWh in 2020.
We also paid 3K for redoing all the ducting in the attic which was looking pretty sad, but be ready for those kind of upsells.
Anyway it helps to know your monthly consumption , and so you can calculate the benefits of any of the upgrades.
Also my neighbor had an American Standard AC installed, which is just the same as Trane we had installed.

next up in April PV panels that should reduce my power bills by up to 50% in some months
