Well, I was supposed to do w6d3 today, but I ended up doing… something else. I made it through the first ten minutes, then had to walk… and then ran for another five minutes before walking for another ten and just calling it quits. Not sure what the deal is, but my roommate is going back to the gym later tonight, so maybe I’ll go too and try again.
Thursday when I was at the gym, some girl got sick and threw up on the track. She ended up being okay though. I felt really bad for her - I don’t think I’d ever be able to come back if that happened to me.
All right, I finally got back to finishing a week during a calendar week, and 7’s in the bag. Again today, I felt like I was running a little slow - but only for the first few minutes. And no emergency butt stop incidents today, so I can confidently say that in 25 minutes I jogged 2.09 miles.
And I really just wanted to post today to say that I really have surprised myself by getting this far in the plan and actually feeling comfortable running, and to thank all of you guys for helping me to stay motivated!
I did a lot better than I expected. I was running on a track and after 9 laps time was up (actually about 21 minutes), but I thought I’d do 1 more lap to complete an even 4k.
Total time was 23:20, so that’s 10.3 kph or 6.4 mph. Which is faster than my 5 minute measured run last week.
Hey, yesterday was my first run with my new sports bra. It felt weird to not have straps digging on my shoulders nor any feeling at all in chest. Meaning no bouncing, no stretching, no tiredness… nothing. I’m sure they still bounce some, but compared to before… it was weird. It was also a good run…
And it was also good on my aerobics class… I had more movement! It is nice to be able to move without boobs in the way! Yay!
I think I’m going to get some more later on (I only have 2, one exclusive for capoeira).
I am so ashamed. All you guys are making such great progress and I haven’t been out since I finally finished Week 9. (It’s just so damn cold!) I did have a dream this morning where I had gone out of town to convince some people about something, and then I flew back in and went running around what looked a lot like my undergrad campus. When I got to my dorm I realized I didn’t have ID to get in because I hadn’t bothered to claim my baggage at the airport, I just started running.
If I didn’t have access to an indoor track I wouldn’t be running. It is too hot to run in the summer and too freaking cold to be outside in the winter (for me).
W6D3 this evening if I can motivate myself. I ran day 2 on Friday and I struggled throughout. It was the day with the two 10 minute runs separated by a 3 minute walk. I think the problem was that I was in a foul mood. It was the first time I hated every minute of being out. Hopefully this evening will be better, even though it is 25 minutes of non stop running. I might forgo Robert this evening, I hate the music on those podcasts and its so much easier to sort out your own music when you are just running in one solid block.
I’m off to do w3d1. I’m scared. At the end of week 2, I did fairly well convincing myself that I’m a runner and running is what fun feels like. I’m not sure I can keep it up for three minutes, but we’ll see. If I’m not back in an hour, there’s a good chance that I’ve collapsed on the treadmill.
I’ve been surprised that I’ve kept going in the cold. Proper clothing really does make the difference. The hard part is getting out of bed - after that, I keep going.
I’ve been for crap this week, though. I’m supposed to go with my mom tomorrow, but I’m getting a hair cut and color, which sucks if it turns out cute and then I get sweaty and have to wash it. Oh, well. Need to get back on the running stick.
I survived w3d1! How is it that I’ve never noticed how long three minutes is? The first three blocks of running wasn’t too horrible. That third block though, oh my! It sucked. I think two of my issues today were improper hydration (I drank too much this weekend…) and improper stretching. For whatever reason, I skipped the v-sit reach part of my stretching and I could really feel it in my calves while I ran.
I’m really excited that I ran for three minutes in a row twice! Wow! Who knew I could do that?
I went out Saturday morning intending to do Week 6, Day 2. I made it almost all the way through the first 10 minutes before quitting. Headaches and running do not mix. I walked the rest of the way, which I figure is better than nothing.
I was planning on going out today but the snow keeps coming down and there are no sidewalks in my neighborhood. I would prefer not to get hit by some moronic driver who is driving too fast for the weather.
Maybe later this week I can get out and run or alternatively, I can get some cross country skiing in. At least I’d be doing something.
I knew you could do it! I mean, if I did it, then really anybody can. You will be suprised at yourself many times in the coming weeks. When you get up to weeks 5 and 6, you will look back on the 3 minute runs wistfully.
The last time I ran it was in the 40s and I wore an old t-shirt, a Hanes sweatshirt (from the $6 shelf at Walmart), and a pair of Hanes sweatpants. The cold wasn’t so bad once I got some distance in, but the wind is usually in my face on the first leg of the run, and that’s no fun at all.
I did get a couple of long sleeve shirts, and I’ve pulled out my winter knit cap, but it’s not so much the weather as getting motivated. I hate the cold and I hate mornings. I could motivate myself to run in the mornings, but to run in cold mornings? What am I, Wonder Woman?
If I don’t go running first thing (after peeing), I don’t go.
I ran again today–COLD, but so worth it. I did a 10:1! Haven’t been able to manage that for a bit. I stopped to walk for no good reason (I was afraid I’d be too tired–I psyched myself out–if I hadn’t looked at my watch, I probably wouldn’t have stopped). Still, I only did my 1.4. I plan on shooting for my 1.9 on Wednesday. New orthotics and cool max stuff make a huge difference. I am sick of my music already, though. I wish I could stream NPR while I run, but I’m too lazy to download podcasts.
I still hate it-but I love how it makes me feel after and I like the results on my body. Plus, what is the alternative? More sloth, weight and feeling crappy about myself? Been there, done that, got that extra large T shirt. No thanks…
Ok, so I suck as a motivational teacher! But if I can get my ass out of bed and run when it’s 35 out, so can you! Go for it!
If you’re sweating even when it’s cold, you are going to hate the hell out of that cotton. It doesn’t keep you warm when it gets wet, it chafes, and it’s altogether your enemy. Consider getting some technical fibers for your winter running.
top- base layer-Coolmax or similar, polypro, wool
top- next layer if needed- more of the same or thin nylon
top- jacket-breathable windbreaker
hands- fleece or neoprene gloves
legs- base layer tights
legs- next layer “loose fit” tights windproof if needed
head- ski cap or over the ears fleece headband
feet- wool socks
mix and match as needed, you will need to experiment
I think I posted this last time around, but this is a good place to start in figuring that out. I say start because, as runner pat says, you’ll need to find what’s right for you. Personally, I don’t wear long pants until it’s in the 30’s, but I know people who break them out as soon as it dips below 55. YM (pun intended) will V.
I also find that it’s really, really important to get out of your running clothes immediately upon returning to home or locker room. Sitting around in clothes that are damp or wet with sweat makes it impossible for me to warm up for a long, long time afterwards.
That doesn’t solve the issue of how to get up and out when it’s a cold morning if you’re not inclined…like eleanorigby, it’s morning or nothing for me most days.
How’d you do? My daughter and I did w3d1, albeit for the second time around, and it was pretty easy for us. A bit cold here tonight, so my girl complained about that a bit. But the run itself was not bad at all. My legs were a little tired on the last run segment. Afterward I felt fine.
Today (temp was in the mid 30s with a brisk north wind-intermittent). This is what I wore:
sports bra
nylon undies
Coolmax short sleeved shirt-tucked into my leggings
Coolmax long sleeved shirt over above
some funky black leggings that are the warmest things I’ve ever put on my body–they’re not polar fleece and their not windproof, but they do have some insulation. Not nylon, either–got them at TJMaxx years ago.
cotton socks (need to find some gortex ones–my feet were COLD at first)
heavy (thick) Nike hooded sweatshirt (TJMaxx again)
Saucony running shoes
yarn gloves
iPod Nano
watch
I should also have had on my insulated (thinsulate) windproof vest–but I was warm enough on the way back. In below 30, I use an ear wrap kind of hat thingy. I have very thick hair, so almost never wear a real hat–too hot.
Check out Marshall’s or TJMaxx for good deals on athletic wear. I swear by them. The ONLY thing I pay full price for is my shoes-I get those fitted by an experienced shoe store. I use Running for Kicks in Palos (for the Chicagoans here). Mel is fantastic and knows his stuff re shoes and running. I just bought a Nike gortex long sleeved top at TJMaxx for about $12. Now I need to find socks.
