Back from the sports doc, who confirmed what I had thought about my knee–the bone is bruised and there’s nothing to do but wait it out and not do stuff that hurts.
Well, that means I’ll be running W6:R2 after work today!

I just wanted to say that I’ve been following this thread just because I’ve been secretly routing for each and everyone who says they are going to do this.
Anyone who takes that step out that door and fights their way through another run deserves high praise. To unabashedly lift from a movie we all know, “Exercising IS pain. Anyone who tells you differently is trying to sell you something.”
The pain isn’t always physical, which is sometimes easier to deal with. Mentally knowing you are going to be tired or sore or uncomfortable for the next 1/2 hour or whatever can make it nearly impossible to even start. But yet so many have. And you keep on going. Day after day, run after run.
Every single step you take gets you that much closer to your goal. Every step is another fraction of a pound lost, another minuscule increase in endurance and another impossibly small step to better health. But the steps add up, and quickly.
Just as with life, exercise is a journey, not a destination. Learning to exercise regularly will change your life (for the better) forever. You’ll look better, feel better and all your family and friends will envy you.
You can do it. The results WILL come. Resolve to do this.
I ran this morning with four blisters, three of which had popped two days ago and one of which bled. I’ll be wearing band-aids for a bit now. But to cmosdes’s point, I did it. Yay!
Still hope to get to my personal goal of 5 and a quarter by Friday. However what I’m running right now is good too (4.2) and just over a year ago I wasn’t running more than about a 1/2 mile at a time.
Go go runners!
I’m back from my second day of this. I did the same week three day 2. Cardio wise I’m good, it’s my calves that are killing me. I ended up finishing, but didn’t get as far. I think I will keep at week 3 for a couple of weeks until my legs can catch up. I have gotten up for swimming twice this week so far as well. Now I just need to stop eating crap at home and I should be good.
I am so proud of every single one of you!
As they say, half of life is just showing up. The same is true for running. Doesn’t matter how fast you run, how far you run, or whether you’re huffing and puffing at the end–the important thing is that you’re there. The number one thing guaranteed to improve a runner is more running. Keep running!
You might want to consider backing up a week. I did something similar for the pushups. I knew I could do that many pushups, but it’s sometimes better to start a little slower than what you can do so you build up to it.
Thank you, cmosdes, that means a lot.
Good luck to everyone tomorrow; I won’t be checking in due to work.
Ow. Bursitis is nasty. I don’t know specifically about bursitis in the knees, but the treatment for arthritis is anti-inflammatories and cold. Do you have a doctor’s okay to run? If so, consider taking a couple of hand towels, get them wet and throw them in the freezer before you run. Then after your run and cooldown, you can wrap your knees in the towels.
There are sleeves you can get for your knees that would offer extra support, but I don’t know enough about bursitis to know if they would help.
Yeah, cardio-wise I could go much longer, but my lower leg muscles are telling me to take it easy. I’d take ShibbOleth’s excellent advice and back down a little to give your legs time to adjust. It’s hard work, this running stuff, and I think my legs are shocked and dismayed!
So, how bad would it be for me to skip a rest day and run tomorrow also? Friday-Monday I’ll be somewhere I’m not sure if I can run or not, but I don’t want to hurt myself trying to get all the workouts in.
Wk3 Day1 down!
We got new next-door neighbors last week. They must see me a lot, because their little girl (6yo or so) waved and shouted, “Hey it’s the running lady! Hi running lady!”
Wow, Queen Bruin! It’s become your identity. You have a lot to live up to now!
I finished my second day today. It was so much better than the first I can hardly believe it. I went to the gym today, and I think their track and air conditioning really helped… Plus my roommate ran with me today.
My legs are killing me though… especially walking down stairs. I don’t know what it is about that motion, but it makes me want to yelp every time I do it.
I know what you mean about the Athens hills, KarlGrenze. They kill me too. That’s why I think I may stick to the track, even if it’s not as exciting.
Good luck everyone! Keep it up!
Which part of your legs hurt on stairs?
I think it’s just the quadriceps. The area above the knee, at least - not sure on the exact muscle.
I’ve pulled those muscles before, doing knee bends. Ow!
The reason I asked is that I get “runners’ knee” which usually flares up while walking down stairs. It causes a very sharp pain at or right over the kneecap, and there’s a pretty easy solution. But quads aren’t as easy, sadly.
I just looked up Runner’s Knee, and that sounds awful! I don’t think what I’m feeling is anything near that magnitude of ouch. I hope yours doesn’t flare up!
What is your easy solution for it, though? I’m curious.
This is an excellent site for running injuries in general.
Good shoes, more stretching and wearing something like this. I rarely get a flare up nowadays.
I was able to walk (briskly) a mile or so up to World of Beer tonight. I’m hoping that means I’ll be okay for running tomorrow night. Wish me luck!
I did Week 1 Day 2 this morning when I got out of bed. At 10:30. I wanted to get up at 6:30 and run, but no matter what, I can’t seem to convince my body to get up at that time of morning. At 8:00 I wanted to get up and run, but my apartment complex is abuzz with little bees getting to work and I didn’t feel it was safe to run with the traffic, (and I didn’t want that many people to see me), so I waited till later. I kind of like running after work better. The only problem with that is that with hockey season starting I’ll be getting home very late on some nights. I guess I’ll just have to work it out as I go.
I had a little trouble with the 7th leg of the run, and had to drop back to a walk about 5 seconds early, but I did it!
I have a little bit of extra motivation going for me…there’s a pool at work for how long it will be before I quit. One guy told me to my face I would never do it. Actually two guys did. I’ll show them!
