I think I failed to mention earlier that while I was annoyed by the techno stuff on the earlier podcasts, I really, really did NOT like the rock/techno stuff that kicks in halfway during one of the runs on Week 4. I wish I had the madskillz to create my own podcast.
I think I’m going to try next week to start week 1 again. My knee is back as close to 100% as it was before the injury. ::fingers crossed::
Good stuff:
Found a nice trail to run on. The whole thing is 3.6 miles, but I haven’t done that yet. There are several trails, and I figure that even if I run/walk it, I’m still out there, getting exercise.
Bad Stuff: Did 4s, 3s and even 1:1s. Oh well–it’s not that I was so exhausted; my Nano died mid-way through. I kept trying to fix it (no joy) and also, I didn’t know quite where the trail ended etc. It’s maintained by Boy Scouts and every 0.01 of the trail is marked. This became quite annoying–I’d think I was sailing along, only to find that I’d done 0.90-0.95. At 1.7 my iPod died and I turned around and walked/ran the way back. I did manage to get a map of the place and have planned out Monday’s run.
I have tried to reboot my Nano to no avail. It is stuck in the middle of a song; no music is coming from it; the screen won’t change and it won’t turn off. I tried connecting it to iTunes on my MacBook and it did nothing. It died in mid-note. Argh.
Anyone know of any REALLY cheap MP3s that I can use to download my music from my MacBook (does Apple even take non-Apple stuff? I have no idea).
Was the transition from 8 minutes to 20 very difficult for you? I found today’s run excruciating! I told myself that if I ran the 20 minutes today, I’d go ahead and sign up for the 5K on Thanksgiving, but I’m really starting to have my doubts that I can run that long or far at this point.
The only thing that kept me going was my stubborn refusal to accept defeat, not the pride of having accomplished it.
The last part is what keeps me going on the 30 mins. The pride comes after finishing the whole stuff and getting a breath.
I think I had to repeat week 5 (or is it 6?) I know there is one week that ends in 20 mins, then the next week starts with 8 and finishes with 20 (right?)… I had to repeat that week. I just couldn’t finish it the first time.
You go from running 8 minutes (and then I assume walking 1) to running 20 minutes straight?
Um, no thanks. Nano just decided to work–5 hours after my run.
I did Week 4, Day 2 today.
I just wanted to let it be perfectly clear that I’m only doing this anymore so I can come in here and say I did.
You go from running eight, walking five, and then running 8 again to running 20 straight.
I definitely have had days like this.
I went ahead and started Week 5 tonight. It wasn’t a piece of cake, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I’m going to do another Day One Week Five on Friday and then again on Monday start the week proper, and plan to have my 20 min run for next Friday. I was able to pic up the pace a little bit tonight to 3.8 mph.
Week 5 day 3 was a no-go yesterday. The leg cramps were beyond discomfort and into searing pain. I’ll give it a go tomorrow, and make sure I drink a lot of water tonight and tomorrow.
<keels over dead at the thought of it>
I’ll stick with my nebbishy program designed by me, thanks…
This is week two for me but I started getting shin splints really bad so have stopped for a few days. I really hope to be able to get back on track, but it hurts so bad. I used to walk a lot and didn’t get them, so I’m hoping it’s just that I’m out of shape and they’ll go away. Soon.
Are you stretching really thoroughly once you’re warmed up? It helps a lot.
I really thought that the initial 5-minute walk was the warmup. I just run in the street, so if it’ll help I’ll do some warming up and stretching at home before I go run, after they heal.
I finished week 4 day 1 on Monday and found it fine. Then I came down with a cold so I didnt get out to do day 2 yesterday. I’m hoping I feel well enough to run on Friday, judging on how that goes I’ll know whether I can go straight into week 5 or whether I need to re do week 4. Of course if I can’t run tomorrow then I’ll be repeating week 4 anyway. Which is very annoying, as I felt I was making real progress. A week of no running can only set me back.
Week 5 day 3 - the big 20 minutes - is done.
Today was actually supposed to be week 5 day 2, but after eight minutes of running I was still feeling pretty good, and I thought how amazing it would be to just keep on going and knock day 3 out right now, so that’s just what I did.
It was a very painful run, not gonna lie, but I’m feeling really proud of myself. I almost can’t believe I just ran 20 minutes straight - 2.1 miles, Google maps tells me. I am a freaking running god!
I checked the schedule again. It was week 6 I had to repeat. I just couldn’t do day 2 the first time around.
That said, once you get to the 25 mins straight, adding on the next 5 mins over 2 weeks is doable (not easy or gasp free or sweat free… just doable).
I have to confess though… I STILL HATE RUNNING AND ALL FORMS OF EXERCISE!!! Unlucky me I lost the genetic lottery, and with my supreme weakness for cookies and chocolate, exercise is the only thing keeping me a bit fit.
Yes, try that. Try to get your legs really warm, then stretch the backs of your legs as much as you can.
Week 5 day 3 is in the bag! 20 minutes! I DID IT!
And it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. I was in an awful mood, and I told myself that if I didn’t finish I was going to kick a puppy or bite the mailman or something. Puppies and mailmen of the world, you are safe!
I’m a long way behind you all, I just finished Week 1 Day 2. Except I’m not quite as far behind as I thought - I somehow copied the wrong podcast and accidentally started with Week 2. I’m coping fine, so I won’t go back to Week 1.
I live in a fairly hilly area, so I’m running on roads, footpaths and rough ground, with lots of uphill bits. A bit harder than running around a track, but a lot more interesting.
