Cable Connection for Computers and Surge Protectors

Does a computer with a cable connection need to use a surge protector for the cable connection?

Yep, the power line is the #1 source of surges. Telephone lines aren’t too much of a problem by comparison.

Oops. Misread. Thought you are asking about surge protection in general.

Coax cables are hard to have surges on. The normal connections don’t involve line level voltages so anything going wrong there has to be horrible. E.g., one of your neighbors sticking the cable in a wall socket. Since the cable is shielded, and the shielding is grounded, lightning strikes don’t cause much of problem unless it’s very close. I wouldn’t worry about it. But make sure the grounding connections on the cable where it comes into your house are kept clean over the years.

My cable attaches directly to my modem, but I have a cord from the modem to my surge protector.
