And the news media dutifully reports that one big rain doesn’t mean an end to the long drought (as if anyone would assume that).

I’ve seen this over and over in different places. I suspect news editors have the phrase “Rainstorm will not end drought” in storage and just tap an F5 key to insert it into their stories.
