California leaves the Union?

So I just returned from a somewhat enjoyable time in Berkely, California, where I met a number of people who were quick to inform me that California, being the sixth largest economy in the world, is better off leaving the Union. I was quick to mention that being the sixth largest economy in the world was in no small part thanks to the infrastructure that all our states get, and that were they to leave the mode of living in CA would dramatically go down.

In fact, my bullshit meter basically didn’t allow me to allow them to make much of a case (well, the bullshit meter and the quantity of alcohol involved). But the next day, visiting a customer, I sort of prompted him on the issue. He mentions that there are quite a few people who don’t want to be a part of the rest of the US and thinks CA can make it on its own. Make it? No doubt it could make it, but I think the secessionists (sp?) have it in their head that their quality of life would remain the same, if not get better! (mainly because their reasons for leaving weren’t based on any principle, as far as I could gather). He cited a lack of water resources to meet the current populations needs, I immediately thought of the power dealie, and that much of CA’s wealth comes from tech industries which benefit greatly from being in a large, stable economy.

At any rate, the bullshit meter never stopped going off, but I would like to hear some arguments about it from the board now that I don’t have any alcohol in me and I’m not arguing about American indians in the same conversation while drinking beer and eating oh-so-salty peanuts.

Sorry to break it to you, California, but Texas has more rights than y’all do in things like this.

-Texas is the only state legally allowed to secede, no questions asked.

-Texas is the only state that can fly its state flag the same height as the American Flag.

-Texas has the right to split into as many as five smaller states when it wants to.

No, I don’t have cites. Sorry.

Personally, I think it would be a stupid idea for California to secede. Many folks would immediately open up references to the American Civil War, and Abraham Lincoln quotes, and stuff like that. They would never win.

When Texas joined the Union the first time, it was by a treaty that allowed the state to suceed at any time, but since it joined the Confederacy during the Civil War and was defeated it was brought back with the same rules as all the other states.

There is a similar thread about California in IMHO and someone there posted this link about the fallacies regarding Texas
http://www.urbanlegends.com/politics/texas_secession_rights.html

Texas did not join the U.S. by means of a treaty. It came into the U.S. through a joint resolution of Congress. It does not have any right to secede.

You can read that resolution here for yourselves.

As for breaking Texas up into more states, that was done in 1850. Texas cannot be divided again.

Believe it or not, it was a legal matter involving Texas in 1869 that moved the Supreme Court to decide that when a state was admitted into the Union, that was “an indissoluble relation.”

I’m still looking up the bit about the Texas flag. It sounds like a UL to me.

So the conclusion is: ALL states have as much right to secede as Texas does, but everyone has to agree to it.

So the Texas flag cannot be flown higheer than the United States flag AND it cannot be flown higher than the flag of any other state. So I don’t see how it can be the ONLY state permitted to fly its flag as high as the U.S. flag.

Now, what was this about California…?

Well, nobody in Claremont has ever mentioned California leaving the United States except as a joke. But in Berkeley, well, they do use a variety of strange recreational substances up there. That’s the only explanation that I can think of.

and then northern california would split from southern california (or engineer the big quake to take out everything from Bakersfield on south…

I think California should Cecede, purchase France - and put massive investment into German companies. Then use power in France to help urge them into their next war with Germany. Then when they inevitably get whipped like a loudmouthed weakling again . . . the German companies will go up radically in value, give CA the to continue conquoring the world!
