California primary election

So, Hillary’s clobbering Bernie in the Eastern/Midwest states…ID closes in 5 minutes, and CA in an hour and 5. Looking like not a good day to be a Bro…

ETA: Urp, Bernie’s gaining 4 delegates in ND.

I was talking to a friend of mine who still lives in CA, and she said she was getting polls! For the first time! It was a funny conversation, especially for me since I used to live in Ohio.

“Well, no, Whoopie Goldberg is just my stage name. I was born Caryn Johnson.”

Bernie won the North Dakota caucus.

And…???

The NY Times has a great map showing who’s leading where within California, as the returns come in. Right now we’re at 7%, and the map looks exactly like a map of marijuana use (=Bernie’s counties). They even use green for this.

Just reporting.

24% in and Sanders is getting walloped 63-37

did anyone think it was really going to be close? CA has every demographic group Bernie loses: blacks, Jews, Hispanics, well-to-do-suburbanites, etc. I knew it would be a “surprise” blowout like New York.

Yes quite a few thought it would be close. CA is less Black than the average state and more Asian-American, a group Sanders has done well with (see Hawaii, for example).

Bye, Bye, Bernie
I’m gonna miss you so;
Bye Bye Bernie,
Why’d ya have to go?
No more sunshine,
It’s followed you away;
I’ll cry Bernie,
Till you’re home to stay.
I’ll miss the way you smile,
As tho’ it’s just for me;
And each and ev’ry night,
I’ll write you faithfully!
Bye, Bye, Bernie,
It’s awful hard to bear;
Bye Bye Bernie
Guess I’ll always care,
Guess I’ll always care,
Guess I’ll always care!

Huh. I was expecting Ms. Clinton to get 55% at best. Still, lots of votes yet to be counted.
There may be some implications on the general - not that CA wasn’t going to go Democratic anyway, but it seems to be a indication of rejecting the outsider and embracing the insider.

The White House has released a statement congratulating Ms. Clinton on winning the nomination, and thanking Mr. Sanders for “energizing millions of Americans.”
It also notes that Mr. Sanders will be meeting with President Obama tomorrow, at Sanders’ request.

Why is it that all the news outlets announce “winner” but not delegate margins or updated delegate counts with the win?

Try this page.
Superdelegates can be toggled on/off, by the way. Also, remember that a lot of the counts, especially in CA, aren’t done yet.

What the hell does THAT have to do with anything?

:smiley:

Yeah, unless it’s a winner take all state, it really doesn’t matter all that much who wins a given state. It’s all about the delegate count.

True. Apparently the early returns in CA have skewed toward older voters. We’re at 60% for Clinton with 40% of the votes counted. It’s very likely Clinton will win (has won, really), but it won’t be with 60% – probably more like 55%.

Game on! (though looks like Bernie won’t concede until a DC speech he’s planning for Thursday – and even then, I bet it won’t be a full concession, but rather a softening and a promise to work together to defeat Trump.)

CNN has called California for Clinton. 67% of the vote is in, Clinton winning 56% to 43%

With this sort of a blowout, Bernie can’t be delusional enough to not know he’s completely forked, can he?

Might take a few days. For the Presidential virus, there is treatment, but only one cure.

I think Bernie was blindsided by all of this. He expected to run a campaign to emphasize his agenda, but did not realize just how strong the response was going to be. None of us did. The day that he thought to himself “I might actually win this thing!”, all bets were off.
