California sues auto makers over global warming.

From this story:

Well, aside from a polar bear dancing on a beach ball whilst singing a Barry White tune, I think I’ve officially seen everything. Of all of the stupid, wasteful, frivolous endeavors I’ve ever really come across, this is pretty much at the top of my list. Am I faulting Californians for being environmentally sensitive? No! Not at all. But when I read this:

I just want to gouge out my eyes for reading the article. California just passes a law, and simply because automakers don’t have it in their capacity to cut emissions back overnight, what do they think of? “Lets sue the bastards!” Of course! Everyone knows that all problems can be solved with a lawsuit! Especially one as scientifically proven as this! :smack:

No, the reduced snowfall couldn’t be caused by changing weather patters or El Nino. Heck, the beaches simply couldn’t erode away by naturally occurring currents in the Pacific! Goodness gracious, fish would never be endangered by overfishing or some other natural threat! No, it’s all a direct result from me driving my F-150 pickup truck back and forth to work every day, and all of those evil snot-nosed devils at the Ford plant that conspired to build it! It’s disconcerting to know that the quickest reaction to any problem is a kneejerk lawsuit in a Federal Court. :frowning:

And look at Fox News—since it causes skin cancer and wastes millions of dollars each year in air conditioning costs, they’re reporting that Sen. Diane Feinstein just introduced a bill to outlaw the sun forever.

Dancing bears amuse me.

Your link doesn’t work.

Fixed link.

Your link didn’t work for me. Here’s another one.

What can I say-- we Californianians are kooky. I don’t understand how Arnold would be in support of this lawsuit (assuming that he is, since it comes form the CA AG). How about suing the folks who actually drive the cars and cause the polution? Oh, they’re voters, that’s right…

It’s even better: The bill has yet to be signed into law.

Of course, I don’t know if they’re beholden to waiting until this (or any) law passes to file a suit.

It’s likely just political grandstanding, imho. Of course. :bored:

Oh, you gotta be sh*ttin’ me! This just makes it even more frivolous-er than it already was.

Yes, I made that word up. But I can think of more frivolous . . .

I think the only reasonable response by automakers is to file a lawsuit against all the Californians who bought their cars and are therefore the cause of all those greenhouse gasses.

The complaint is here (PDF): http://ag.ca.gov/newsalerts/cms06/06-082_0a.pdf

It doesn’t have anything to do with the new law.

Assuming there are provable damages - which is a stretch - I agree that the responsible people are those who bought and operated the cars.

Perhaps there is another motive here, to negotiate higher fuel-efficiency for example.

Validation through Key Lime Guys cite:

I would love to see this played out on the world stage. It’s not like Turkmenistan doesn’t contribute to global warming neither. . .

Californians, I feel sorry for you. You have people in your legislature that think this shit up. You elect them, and they waste your time and money pulling crap like this.

Tripler
Really, I do feel sorry for you.

You gotta hope there’s some reasonable explanation. Maybe it’s just to be a big pain in the ass? I mean, CA is being sued for its stiff regulations, so maybe they’re countersuing to put the hurt on. Not terribly ethical, but at least rational somehow.

A small price to pay for living in paradise.

I just can’t see anyone worth their legal credentials thinking this is winable. It’s gotta be some kind of tactic, the goal or goals of which don’t depend on a verdict.

bleagh, winnable

I would love to see the automakers say OK fine, no more cars delivered to California. You want one, head to Nevada. Anything goes there.
