California Unemployment Question

First off all, I am not the member known as Lilyofthefield. I requested a name change but haven’t heard back, so perhaps I’ve emailed the wrong person. I want to avoid confusion.

I have a factual question about California unemployment. I can’t find the answer on the website. I can’t find the answer in their booklets, and we don’t have a local office. And calling them is ridiculous.

Until recently I worked two jobs. One was 30-40 hours per week. The second was 20 hours per week. I was laid off at the first (30-40 hours per week) job.

I still have the second job. I qualify for California California Unemployment services.

Unemployment requires me to look for full time employment.

I was offered a few more hours at my 20hr/week position. It’s unclear how many hours, And the hours won’t necessarily be consistent.

Does anyone know how many hours per week, and for what period of time, unemployment considers a job “full time” in California? Thanks.

I would assume 40 hours a week or more.

If you take a PT job, they will reduce the UC you get by that much. There’s a formulae.

Retired 37 year EDD employee here. I has been a long time since I worked in Unemployment Insurance, but this may be helpful. Be absolutely sure to accurately report your weekly earnings. As DrDeth says, it will reduce your weekly benefit. You get to keep $25 and the remainder of your earnings for the week is deducted from your weekly benefit amount. At the point you have a 0 dollar weekly benefit, that’s effectively full time for you. The money isn’t lost, and can be claimed later in the claim year for any week you are unemployed, available for work and actively seeking work. You should accept all the hours offered on your current job or it can get dicey if you are deemed to have refused available work. I think 36 hours per week is considered full time, but I’m not positive on that number, as I said, its been many years since I did that stuff every day.

In the meantime, the job market is looking up a little and this might be a good opportunity to use your extra time to see what is out there that might not require you to work two jobs. Happy hunting!
