Call me "Johnny Luna-Moth-Egg"

I raise Saturniid Silkmoths. This year I have had a fine crop of Luna Moths! After mating, I let them go to polulate the neighborhood. Here is a pic of a lucky male released after spending a day in loving embrace with a female. With the females, I put them in a paper bag for a day to lay some eggs before release. For the past few days, I have been placing bits of paper bags with eggs on many specific trees in my neighborhood and at work. I hope many of them will reach the adult stage and fly on warm summer nights!

Johnny Appleseed? PFFFT!

Gawd! I am such a nerd!

Jamie Gumm? Is that you?

Ouch! Boy, did that movie ever cast a shadow on us moth lovers! :stuck_out_tongue:

Ooooh. Aaaaah.

And a belated ooh and aaah from me, too. Pretty moth! Is that the same one used in the Lunesta sleeping pill ad?

Ooo ahhh IS RIGHT! I never heard of anyone doing this as a hobby, and I’ve only seen an Actual Luna Moth once! I would love to see one in my own neighborhood!

Yes. After that commercial, it is very easy to describe these guys to people who have never seen them in life.

PS, they have no mouth parts so they will not eat your clothes (one of the questions I am invariably asked). They only live for a few days to mate. Such a pity.

I was under the impression moth larva ate the wool anyway. Wrong?

No, you are right. Most people I speak with can’t seem to grasp that.

Luna Moths? Like the ones in those damned Lunesta ads? Those ads scare the heck out of me. It looks like some scifi-horror film about alien insects taking over people’s bodies while they’re asleep

How are you sleeping?

You might enjoy http://www.wormspit.com/ , which has some info about various silkmoths. The guy raises silkmoths, and processes the cocoons.

Cool! Thanks! I did not know this site existed.

I am absolutely fascinated! I love luna moths. I had no idea one could raise them in captivity. How do you get started?

We had a Luna moth on our garage for a couple years running. I heard they really like walnut trees, which I have a bunch of. Cool moths!

I’m not sure which comes first, the moth or the egg.

Hey! He’s on my LJ Friends List!

TwoTrouts, that is the coolest thing I’ve heard in quite some time. Thanks for helping to beautify the world.

Two Trouts, you are a hero! Luna moths are my favorite, followed closely by Cecropia. What a wonderful thing to do.

And, Lynn, thanks for that link, too.

Nifty looking moth there, senor. Interesting hobby…I kinda like it!

Easiest hobby in the world! I go for hikes in the woods in the fall and look for coccoons beneath walnut and sweet gum trees. I built a large screen cage which I have hung beneath my deck outside. Put the cocoons in and wait for spring!
