Call of Duty: Black Ops

Yep.

Yep.

No. When you die, hacked equipment goes away. However, hacked SAM turrets and sentry guns stay active.

Makes sense.

I mainly play free-for-all… so not that many opportunities to even steal a package, let alone hack one.

Another full ffa game from last night…

edit: Another question: Is there any way at all for a player to tell if their CP, turret, or equipment has been hacked? I guess equipment like the camera or motion sensor will stop working for them, but how would I know if my claymore had been hacked? (except the obvious - walk in front of it)

You don’t. Your spy/counter spy planes are getting shot down, you’re taking fire from what was, until recently, your turret. Those are ways you find out.

Right. The announcer doesn’t tell you. Thank god, or the pro perk would be useless – I’d never hack a claymore if the owner was immediately notified of my position.

There are a few ways to tell your stuff has been hacked. First, as LOUNE mentions, to get victimized by it. Second, if it hasn’t been hacked, you’ll be able to see your team’s icon over it - even through walls. That icon disappears without an announcer notification? Your shit’s been hacked. Third, if you yourself have hacker on, you’ll be able to see it glowing.

On a related note, I got another multiple-kill with a hacked crate last night. This time a double kill. I love those things: if you can manage to pull off the booby trap in a team game, they’ll almost always attract multiple enemies. I’ve probably booby trapped five crates total and have gotten eight kills with them.

They count towards your “kills with care packages” challenge. Which is handy, because otherwise the only way to get kills with a care package is to drop it on someone, which is tricky.

this (bolded) is what I was getting it. I know it would be silly to have the announcer say “Your claymore has been hacked”. I was thinking of more subtle ways that an observant player could spot. Exactly like what Randy suggests - no longer having your team icon above the claymore would be the kind of ‘clue’ that I was looking for.

I don’t think you get team icons in ffa though, so if my claymore gets hacked I don’t think I’d know unless it kills me.

So I got on today and noticed there are some changes on PS3. With patch 1.07 a few weeks ago, they got rid of one of my favorite game modes, mercenary team death match, and replaced it with mercenary mosh pit, which is stupid.

Today, I noticed they have brought back mercenary TDM (while keeping mercenary mosh pit). Which is good. But they deleted the whole section of prestige game modes. Which stinks, because whenever my friend and I play together, we almost always did prestige TDM. We picked that over normal core TDM because for whatever reason, that mode attracted a lot of terrible players, and we could almost always clean up in there.

Any thoughts about why they made this change? Were any other changes made in this new update? It’s apparently not an actual “patch,” so it’s hard to google for this stuff.

Just in the interest of keeping people informed for no reason, my new Xbox (purchased on March 1st) died on Wednesday March 15th. Seriously. Since it was less than 30 days, it was replaced no questions asked so I’m on my fourth Xbox since January. I joked that my first Xbox lasted me 3 years, second 45 days, third 15 days … this one should last me about six hours.

You might consider the idea that it’s not the machine. We’ve had the same 1st-generation XBox for two years, and I play the hell out of it. I’d bet you’re getting some sort of power fluctuation that’s killing them.

And when you send that one back, the next one will show up already broken.

This reminds me of a move by Infinity Ward regarding MW2 which virtually ruined the game for me - Namely the removal of 3rd person Cage mode.

I can understand that there was a reason, but there would be better and more successful ways to acheive the same goal - which was to eliminate boosting. All the removal of cage did was force the boosters into FFA - further ruining the game.

I played Cage legitimately. I didn’t boost. I loved the one-on-one nature of it. It was suspenseful, intense, fun. You could often develop a friendly rapport with the person you were playing against (even if you were thrashing them  )

Anyway, since this thread isn’t quite dead yet. Some more videos since I last posted any…

Killed by a floating explosive bolt (COD Black Ops PC)

30 Kills 8 Deaths Free For All - Jungle (Call of Duty Black Ops PC)

21 Kills 1 Death - Array (Call of Duty Black Ops PC)

And after waaaaaay too much farting about with sony vegas to get this to bloody render with sound and without glitches, a game from last night…

30 Kills 5 Deaths - Array (Call of Duty Black Ops PC)
p.s. better either let them load, or play them windowed because youtube’s bandwidth availability is atrocious these days.

Another one from last night. First video I’ve uploaded of this map…

30 Kills 9 Deaths - Cracked (Call of Duty Black Ops PC)

My friend at activision finally ended up grabbing me my free copy of the game so I’ve been playing.

It’s… alright. Seems unpolished compared to the IW games, but at least it isn’t a total DOA failure like MW2. The server system works alright.

The players of this game are very bad, and very dumb - even for a COD game. And I’m not sure why.

At any given time, by my estimate, 40-60% of people playing the game are playing on nuketown. This is, by far, the highest percentage of idiots I’ve seen playing on map over and over in a game - much worse than anything in any previous COD game, and worse even than dust/dust2 in counter-strike. Not only that, but it’s a shitty, retarded map. It looks like crap, it’s not well designed - you spawn and die instantly in most places on the map, in team modes it’s all long and narrow so eventually people start spawning behind you, it doesn’t look good, it doesn’t have any interesting areas. The only thing it provides is instant action via being crazy cramped. So you spawn, toss a grenade randomly, shoot someone else who just spawned 15 feet from you, then die. And repeat. Over and over. And half the servers in the fucking game are 24/7 nuketown maps - people do this over and over, just spawn die spawn die. You have to be a fucking idiot with an attention span measured in milliseconds for this to be appealing.

I tend to game when I’m up at night and the gaming population in the US is low - so if I feel like playing a rarer game type, say headquarters, I may find that there are only 4 or 5 active servers in the US playing it at that time, and ALL OF THEM ARE FUCKING 24/7 NUKETOWN. The majority of people in this game are fucking diagnosably retarded.

Everyone seems pretty bad at the game too. After my first day or two when I unlocked some weapons, my kill ratio has been like 2.3:1, and I’m not good at these types of games, nor do I kill whore by camping to boost my ratio. I’m actually out doing the objectives, taking the domination points, running into rooms with enemies - and somehow I’m still getting a pretty good ratio. For comparison, my lifetime kill/death in cod4 was 1:1. I’m not sure what it is, but for some reason the people who play the game are bad.

Oh, and the campers in hardcore are way worse than any other cod game I’ve played. In COD4 hardcore, you’d get a few people who’d camp one doorway or stairwell but usually no more than 1-3 per game. You’d get a lot of people that moved cautiously, from cover to cover, peeked around things - and that was fine - but at least they moved. In BLOPS, when you play a hardcore match, more than half the people on the server AREN’T MOVING AT ALL. Just pick a spot to camp and stay there as long as they can. It’s incredibly boring. Non-hardcore plays out okay though.

Overall… meh. It’s a technical mess - it looks worse than cod4 which was made 4 years ago, yet runs a lot worse. Stuttering issues all the time, low FPS in general. There’s no way a game that looks so mediocre should run so slowly.

But I guess it’s alright to fire up every once in a while to take care of that run and gun itch. There’s not really anything else on the market that’s any good.

How are you guys posting your videos to youtube btw? Are you just frapsing the theater mode, or is there some way to have it directly save recordings to video files (instead of the file share thing that can only be viewed in the game itself)?

Mine were all uploaded directly from the Xbox game theater mode. Not sure if it works the same way on PC, though.

Is the SDMB party still going?

I signed up but no one ever seems to be playing on it?

I’ve already traded it in. I’m playing Crysis 2 these days.

As far as I know, the ad-hoc SDMB group thing on xbox has never played anything ever.

Some snipping…

Maybe that’s why I’m able to do quite well sometimes

I don’t mind nuketown when it comes up in a rotation very occasionally but I deliberately avoid the nuketown 24/7 servers and agree with you for the most part.
I also hate sniper-only servers, and servers with stupid server rules (certain perks turned off)

I tend to play FFA almost exclusively. My recent K/D average (if you take the average of my last 3 months of play) is probably 2.5 or 3. (My overall for the entire time playing the game is 1.75)

I don’t play hardcore.

My FPS is fine. I tend to stick to servers with pings around 80.

I find myself coming back to it constantly. I’ve done better in this COD than in any other so naturally I’m having more fun with it.

I am frapsing theatre mode. I could fraps the game, but fraps does something to control latency which makes you slower to react in-game.

Frapsing theatre mode also allows me to create free-camera view shots which I can then use as PiPs in my videos. And more recently the dolly-cam features of theatre mode.

for relevance (or just a shameless plug) here is my channel…

I’d be the first to admit I am far from a ‘pro’ gamer, so perhaps I am benefiting from the abilities of the other players.

Having said that - servers often have some gold-gun-toting ‘godlike’ player totally dominating every single game - often getting accused by the others of hacking.

One of the advantages of playing on Xbox… no hackers. It doesn’t even come up.

I play almost exclusively Hardcore, as I have found that moving back and forth from hardcore to core just messes me up in both modes.

I do hate me some campers in Hardcore TDM. I don’t do it myself, as I don’t give a shit what my KDR is. It’s a meaningless number. IF I can take one game and camp and get 22-1 or some shit like that, it’s meaningless.

I did prestige a few weeks back, and then got a new TV that took me a few weeks to get the glitches ironed out on. In many ways, it was just like starting over again, with the added frustration of KNOWING that I could do better with the proper tools. Ugh.

I won’t be prestiging again, for sure.

That’s pretty much a COD:BO thing; MW2 was RIFE with them. I also suspect that BO has some, but they’re more circumspect.

I play exclusively hardcore as well- I can’t get used to the idea that you can pop someone in the chest with a rifle at 10 feet, and they can easily return fire or dodge, unless you put 4-5 rounds into them.

Hell, I get pissed about last-stand. There should be some rules on it- if you get hit in the head at almost any range, no last stand for you. If someone puts more than one bullet in your chest close-in, no last stand for you. There shouldn’t be that invulnerable lag either, and the pistols should be wildly inaccurate, not the competition level tack-drivers they seem to be. I mean, NOBODY’S going to hit squat at more than 15-20 yards with a Makarov. I have one in real-life, and it just ain’t going to happen with those sights.

Man, I live to prestige. I view any xp that’s earned after the cap as “wasted,” and I can’t do it. I want to get to level 14 for the gold “camo,” but I wish that they’d left in the weapon-specific challenges that gave you interesting stuff for your gun or titles. It was the only thing that kept me from prestige in MW2.
