Haven’t noticed a pattern other than previously mentioned.
I’ve been learning a few things:
-Always look behind you.
-Listen.
-Never snipe from the same window twice.
-A prone body on the floor may not be dead.
Some of those pointers are moot if you run with a set group of people. Sniping is best done through the ACOG scope. It’ll give you a lot more versatility, although the sway sucks. The prone bodies aren’t usually too bad. Not many people run the Cold Blooded equivalent.
I find the scopes annoying sometimes since they block so much of my view.
Sniping is problematic then, because it’s so specialized.
For long distance sniping the scope is not problematic. It’s tactical situations where I’m trying to be on the look out while keeping my gun ready where the scopes are annoying. I should practice more shooting from the hip.
That worked better with the WA2000 in Modern Warfare 2. They made it a LOT harder to snipe in Black Ops. Even the ACOG scope sways, and you can’t even hold your breath to steady it. The sniper rifles aren’t very powerful until you get to the Barrett and PSG1. You’re best served with the ACOG scope, especially if you don’t have a set crew you run with and roles and plans for the maps.
To expound a little more, you notice when you zoom in, it jerks the gun up and to the left? That’s to stop quickscoping. With the reticle jumping when you zoom in, you can’t quickscope as easily. I say “as easily”, because it still moves in a predictable manner, and you can take it into account.
The root of the problem is that assault rifles are so accurate at range and do so much damage, it’s really not worth sniping if you’re going as a lone wolf, unless you’re making a hobby out of it. The maps really aren’t even set up for sniping, save for a couple of instances on a couple of maps, but everything else is designed to be very close-to-intermediate range.
Yeah, they’ve made an effort to limit sightlines for most everything. I was surprised at how well I could hit long distance targets with just iron sights.
Just how much do suppressors affect weapon damage?
At extreme damage, it’s not good. It’s not as bad as it was in Modern Warfare 2, but it still nerfs it at range. You see a lot of people with machine guns running silencers because it seems to steady the gun a little bit. That could just be placebo effect, though, or people liking to run Warlord.
Bit of both for me. It does help smooth the kick on the AK-47 and the Commando. And I usually run Warlord Pro for the extra grenades.
Plus, I’m using Ghost Pro most of the time as well, so having the silencer makes sense to me.
I made a “stealth” class that has Ghost and Ninja as well as a suppressed weapon. I did OK with it at first but then I ran into an expert with a ballistic knife. Or rather, he ran into me. From behind. A LOT.
ETA: does the ballistic knife appear in your hand when you have it for your secondary and go into Second Chance?
No. You have your pistol.
Damn. That ballistic knife is vicious. Is it always instant death?
Yep. I presume those people running around like Rambo also have Scavenger, so they can pick up ammo from the blue ammo drops.
The ballistic knife is always instant death in normal multiplayer; like any melee attack, it deals exactly 100 damage. However, you can set up a private game where everyone has more than 100 health, so stabbing isn’t an instant kill. You can make it so that 10+ stabs are required to get the kill. I’ve done it with friends, and it can actually be fun. It leads to some interesting dances.
I don’t like scavenger. It’s the only Tier 1 perk I never use. When I’m on a tear and running out of ammo, I just pick up a stray gun. And I always make it a practice that if I’m running around and see a gun on the ground that I like, I trade it for my secondary.
I used to be strongly anti-Scavenger until I started staying alive longer with sniping. Because the ACOG scope sways and you can’t stop it, you throw a few inaccurate shots out there. You spawn only with something like 20 bullets, so in one solid killstreak, you’re out of ammo. Besides, Scavenger Pro isn’t shabby at all. I did, however, swap the double Pythons out for the first weapon I find.
The very first time I used the ballistic knife, I had just picked it up from a corpse and then turned around and through luck immediately killed two guys. Since then, almost no luck.
I only use scavenger now if I have a spas-12. Otherwise I also pick up other weapons for my secondary. You can get some cool stuff. And I like the idea of using an enemy weapon on them.
Why is Nuketown so damn popular? Everytime it’s a choice for the next game, everyone votes for it. Up until yesterday, I hated it so much that I would leave the lobby when the vote got locked in for it.
But now that I’ve begun using the Stoner63, it’s not so bad.
My guess is because it can be a something for everyone map. The run & gun sorts can mix it up by the moving truck and bus, while the mid-range creeper guys can hang out by the sides of the house and by the sign and jeep, while the sniper types can hang out in the backyards, garages and upstairs in the houses.
That, and since everyone’s right there together, you tend to get more and higher killstreaks, so you get to play with stuff that you typically don’t when playing maps like Array or Discovery. No hunting around for some guy for a full minute, just to have some other dude pop out and cap you from behind.
I think that it may be because it’s a hyper-action map. All the ADD kiddies can just charge in and start gunning.
I think I started doing better on Nuketown because I realized I’ll never live long and can just open up on someone without regard to ammo. The Stoner with the extended mag sure helps for this.
So far, I enjoy Firing Range and Array the most. Probably because those are the maps I know best.
