Never had it before but recently bought a phone with the display built in. The instructions said to call the phone company to tell them I had it. I didn’t.
Would the phone company charge me if I did? Otherwise would they turn off the service?

I always thought even if you had a phone with a display, the caller ID wouldn’t work until you turned on the service with the phone company. Are you sure it’s not included in your plan and you’re not already paying for it? It’s included in my plan, along with voice messaging and call waiting.
I agree. If it works, it is because you are already paying for it. If it doesn’t work, you need to call them.
Many telco companies offer ‘bundled’ services, so that if you want call waiting, you get caller i.d. and/or something else with it. They scale the price accordingly and the save some legwork &service costs…the set you up all at once with all the $hit you are likely to order anyway.
To clarify, if it doesn’t work, you need to call them…if you want it to work.
Turn off what service? The caller ID feature, or basic phone operation?
To have functioning caller ID, you need two things: a display device (which you now have) and caller ID service from the phone company. It’s not clear if you now have functioning caller ID. If you do, it’s hard to imagine you’re not paying for it already.
I think the OP might be misunderstanding the insert that came with his phone.

Sounds like he thinks he is *required *to report the new phone to the phone company, which he didn’t. Of course, he isn’t required to report it at all. If he doesn’t, he just won’t get Caller ID service if he doesn’t already (unknowingly) have it.
I’ve paid a small fee to British Telecom for years to enable caller ID, and dead useful it is too.
But I recently discovered BT have a (mostly useless) privacy package you can sign up to for free, where your number is unlisted, it’s illegal for British companies to cold-call you, and caller ID is provided gratis. So I cancelled my paid caller ID service, and signed up for the free one. If I hadn’t have found out, the bastards would have gone on letting me pay for a service that I could now sign up for at no cost. Gits!
