A freind of mine was recently cleaning out his attic and found an original Grandma Moses painting of a winter scene. It’s 28" X 24" and in great condition. Does anyone know what this might be worth???
Oh! Was it actually SIGNED by Grandma Moses? If so, I can give you an estimated value.
Not a thing unless he gets it appraised and certified that it is indeed a painting by Anna Mary Robertson Moses. How are you sure it’s authentic? At any rate, I wouldn’t trust anyone here to give you a fair guess at a value since none of us have seen it, seen its condition and I doubt any of us are art appraisers. I’d start opening the Yellow Pages, myself…
There are plenty on ebay.com for $5.99 up with no bids.
I’m assuming that by “original” the OP means the painting itself, not prints made off of it (as seen on eBay). Actually, you were probably joking and I checked on eBay just to see as well, but I thought I’d fill the listening public in.
True. Lithos & prints often look & feel like the originals, however.
It’s in great condition, signed by the artist, it’s not a print, and it has a label on the back of the painting from the gallery (no longer in business, or renamed) it was purchased from in Boston in 1951. It comes from a reliable source who also purchased other fine antiques, paintings, and collectibles. You’re right, it should be appraised by an expert - just thought I could get some quick opinions here!
Yeah, nothing like having some more details. Surely you know, if we knew stuff like that we wouldn’t be on the board, we would all be selling art & be too rich to post here.

No disrespect intended to your excited friend, but this smells an AWFUL lot like that old chestnut- " My Great-Uncle’s cousin Morty found this old rotted violin case in the closet of their farmhous in Old Lyme, and guess what? It had this faded and yellowed label on the inside, that said, ‘Antonio Stradivarius, Cremona, 1728’ on it ! We’re RICH!!! " Awfully exciting sounding…until you realize that that was NOT the Old Master’s name.
Find a REAL art historian, one who has NOTHING to gain by assessing the validity and provenance of said painting. And, good luck ! Stranger things have happened.
