Right now I’m playing the demo (for the second time, having done once last spring after a similar thread), and am waffling on whether or not I want to play.

After only three or four days in, I’m seeing a lot repetition in the agent missions (go to this waypoint, blow up various ships for some reason, possibly pick up some specific cargo or captives, come back for 100000ISK.)

I got through the learning curve last year, and coming in this time, it was like riding a bike, I had no problem hopping back on, and ended up skipping most of the tutorial.

In three or four days, I’ve ditched the frigate class altogether and am now riding the only listed Minmitar Destroyer, the name of which I cannot remember right now, and since the servers seem to be having especial trouble with downtime, I can’t get in and find (Nevermind, found it at EVE’s website. The Thrasher). I’ve equipped it with one long range missile launcher, two long range howitzer turrets, and two short range energy turrets (I am liking that energy “short range” small turrets are about 4000m range, whereas projectile turrets are hard pressed to top 2000m. Not to mention no longer dealing with ammo.) I have a small shield booster that doesn’t do too much, a capacitor booster that essentially serves as my energy weapons’ “ammo,” and I’ve just finished training to be able to use a smartbomb I salvaged, which looks like it’ll be good if I’m getting swarmed up close (I think it also has about a 4000-5000m range) but will kill my capacitor really quickly if I leave it on. The game has really opened up as far as challenge once I got the Thrasher, where I don’t have to warp back to a station to repair after killing one enemy ship at a time in encounters.

I’m liking it, and I’m sure if I were to move my way into a player corp, it’d get even better (so far I’ve played without interacting with any other actual human beings). But I’m afraid of liking it too much, and ending up adding another monthly fee to the list of cable, internet, and Netflix that aren’t really necessary.

Glad you like it. :slight_smile: But may I say something about that ship fitting..? It’s not a good idea to mix different range weapons. That way you will never be effective. Better to fit all one size/type and then orbit the enemy at you optimal range. And remember, longer range seldom means you are safer, because the bigger the ship you are up against, the harder it will be for it to hit you if you are up close to it.
oh, and also don’t repair at the station, that only costs money. Get yourself a armor repairer instead.

One advantage with EvE, CCP allows the sales of GTCs (Game Time Cards) for the in game currency (ISK). If you go to the forums you can see players that sell 30 days cards for between 120 to 150 million ISK, there are a number of people I know who only pay for the game using in game currency. It seems like a huge amount of cash to make now, but it is possible after a little while in the game.

I was going to say that it’s not a good idea for Matar to fit energy weapons but then again…half the time it’s not a good idea for Amarr either :wink:

Oh, understood that longer means safer, and I do set my orbit for the long range ones. Unfortunately, just starting out, all of my enemies are pesky short range craft, who inevitably come in on me, whatever my range. The short turrets only get activated for about one enemy ship out of three.

Wait, I’m not parsing this correctly.

Longer is not safer against large ships, because they are lumbering and typically equipped with the long range weapons? Makes sense.

But as I said, right now, I’m just starting out, and up against a lot of short range enemies. I figure I try to keep them long, where they don’t have the guns to attack me, and then when they inevitably fly in short, then I have some faster recharge short range weapons.

You might want to look into getting a stasis webifier for one of your ships midslots, used on an enemy ship this slows them down a lot and makes them easier to hit. I don’t know if you’ve seen it already but the Turret Tracking Guide is a very useful guide to work out how your ships turrets work. You might also want to think about getting into a cruiser, destroyers seem like an upgrade to frigates but in reality they are barely any better once something starts hitting you.

EvE online isn’t so much a learning curve but a learning brick wall…but it’s well worth hanging in there.

Well… Yeah ok, so having some short range weapons might be handy for you, but consider using only one weapon type+ launcher. Oh, and check the info for the Thrasher, I’m sure it has some bonuses for projectiles, so that is probably your best bet.

For anyone new in game, this is a good thread to bookmark (from the EvE-O forums). It links to threads discussing just about every ship and possible loadouts for them, very handy when you are starting off in a new ship.

Just remember that some of the loadouts suggested require reasonably high skills, but the people posting are normally good about stating if that is the case and if you want to check, use Quickfit (that I linked above).

I’ve been playing for about a year, but only sporadically for the past 6 months or so. (My sweetie decided he wanted to start up with WoW again, so we rolled new characters together.)

I pretty much just log on to switch out training, or make a couple cargo runs. I’m pretty much JUST training right now… up to around 10M SP at the moment. I’ve got enough points in shield-related skills that if I get hit by a prat at a stargate it doesn’t destroy my Mammoth completely and I can usually get away. One of the best changes they made to the game was to make the “Insta” bookmarks obsolete by allowing you to warp to within 0m of any destination (rather than 15m or whatever the limit was before). I wasted SOOOO much time setting up stupid bookmarks so I could avoid being engaged by the less than savory members of the community.

And they also apparently added a “Most Wanted” list, which I find amusing. Apparently for some folks it’s a badge of honor to have the biggest price on their heads. Go figure. I just like to do my thing, whether it’s mining or cargo running or missions. I’d rather not pvp unless I KNOW I can beat the other player (which isn’t all that often, unfortunately, because I suck royally at pvp).

EvEMon, which lets you set up a training plan for your character (so you know what time you will need to change your training and see how long it will take you to fly x ship or use x piece of equipment).

Both useful tools but EvEMon is probably the best and really helps.

My character is pure combat and I prefer flying small ships…Corp is moving to 0.0 soon and it’s a running joke in the corp that I refuse to train for battleships…so it’s going to be a fleet of battleships with a tiny interceptor charging ahead looking for trouble.

I like my Rifter, but I am training to fly a Wolf or Jaguar. Right now I’m just a mission-running carebear. I want to be well-trained in tech II before I venture into 0.0

I gotta second the above apps too. They made getting into the game a lot easier.

I have learned a lot today about skill and stat allocation, realized my Minmatar sucked a bit, and created a Caldari in his place.

But now I have a question. Some jackass trader in the Caldari state has set impossibly low buy prices on a wide array of items. All ores and ammo for 0.01ISK, a lot of items for 100.01ISK. I can see plenty of items I wanted to sell to other buyers who were requesting 40,000ISK for an item, but of course, the quick sell would go to this jerk. If I try setting a sell price at the mark of one of the others, it does not immediately sell. It goes into “selling orders” status, until (I assume) one of the other buyers takes me up on my one or two of that item. In the meanwhile, I could only try selling five orders at a time.

Is there a way to bypass this jackass, and sell to somebody with a more reasonable price point? Or am I stuck with items piling up in stations, waiting for the powers that be (or other players) to smack him down?

I really do not understand the economics aspect of the game outside of selling things immediately at the lowest price, though I get the buying a bit better, searching for better prices at the cost of an extra system jump or two. There has to be a way to get past this jerk’s buy requests and still be able to sell more than five items at a time, right?

Basically you have to look at where the buyers with the high prices are and how far their buying range is. Normally if you want to get top dollar for a given item, you have to haul it to the location of the person willing to buy it for that amount and sell it there.

Trading skills like Marketing and Visibility will allow you to place buy and sell orders at remote locations, and there are other trade skills that allow you to have more outstanding orders at any given time.

But if I’m just starting out, and am a soldier with no business skills, and can set no more than five orders at a time, and don’t want to waste hours at a time hopping between systems, I’m screwed?

I did find this help page that basically says I am. Suddenly it’s a lot less fun when I can’t get any money together from salvaging to help in my own outfitting.

Don’t worry about making new characters. I created a new one too when I realised how screwed up my stats were. I had a really high Charisma stat… Now I’m a little annoyed with my high Int/Wis. I keep hoping for the day that CCP allow us one free respec, I’d bung it all into Perception/Willpower (gunnery main stats).

Obviously, I’m not holding my breath, heh.

There is a low level skill that allows you to increase the amount of sell orders you can have at once. It increases your maximum orders by 5 per level, so even if you only get the first two (~ an hour in skill training?), you’ve basically tripled your maximum number of sell orders.

If you want to sell an item instantly then you will need to haul them to a station with a decent buy price. Back in my Empire days I used to refine most of the mission loot into minerals (there is a low level skill that makes this more efficient I believe) and then, once I had a large amount, haul the minerals to a good station in order to sell for the maximum.

A hauler (Industrial Ship skill) shouldn’t take too long to train for. I would recommend fitting nanofibers* in the low slots so that you align/warp away from gates faster. There are people that will run a suicide attack on haulers in Empire space. They’re rare but you might as well do all you can to defend against it.

*I say nanofibers but I know they have been changed lately, I’m not sure if they’re as good as they were before. Basically, extra agility helps you align faster and higher acceleration lets you get to the speed you need to warp at faster.

I only ever trained the trade skills when I needed to (like when our station was captured with one of my BS and AF inside and I needed to remote sell it). I can fly a Transport Ship though (I actually like hauling during corp mining sessions).

Inertial stabilizers are now superior to nanofibers for quick warp alignment. They’re both stacking nerfed, though, so the first nano will be more effective than the third inertial stab.

But I’m an odd Amarr…I fly a lot of Matar ships, although I know I’m going to get some grief from the RP’rs sometime, I like to call my Rifter the “Slave Trader”. I spend more time pottering about in my Rifter than I do in a Punisher. Although I like my Malediction (Interceptor, the choice for the suicidal speed freaks out there) and Retribution (AF, for such a little ship it has a stupidly good tank).

Matar (and Amarr) are hard going to start with, but get better at high skill levels whereas Caldari are fantastic to start with but not quite as good at PvP. I have a little Caldari alt on a second account and nearly fell of my chair when I first started missioning with her, totally different from my Amarr character.
