See here. When the TV was in the corner, it was on top of a 5 foot dresser (which I got rid of the other day), so now it’s just waiting for a new location.
GuanoLad - amazing amazing work! I love it! I might tweak it a bit, but you’ve really got the gears spinning in my head. Never even thought of moving the keyboard over there. I think that I’m going to put the TV on the laptop desk though … I might have to find some makeshift way to put it on top of the audio receiver (which heats up so needs ventilation above it)…OR…(never even thought of this one before either), but I could put one of the tupperware drawers on top of the radiator (there’s a metal shelf on it, so it won’t melt) and then the TV on top of that. It won’t block too much of the window.
Wiring isn’t a huge issue. I’ve had extension cords running all over the room. It might just become a problem when I install my AC, since I’ll need more than 2 outlets there – I have one of those orange outdoor single prong cords - are those safe to use with AC’s?
I’ve had my bed in that corner before, but oriented the other way. It IS easier to make my bed (and get objects which I store under it) when I have room on both sides, but I’ve handled it fine in my first two layouts here. I think rather than having it right up against the wall, I will center it against that side of the wall (that wall has a little chunk missing due to a chimney behind it), which’ll leave me a foot or so on the other side.
I’ve seen other rooms where the dresser is kept in the closet (including at least one dorm I lived in at college), and it really can be a nice space-saving feature.
Anyway, I think I am going to go with a slight variation of Guano’s idea, but please send along any other layout ideas if you can think of some - outside influence will probably give me even more good ideas!
I rotated the rug because it would provide more walkable floor space this way. I also destacked the 3 sets of drawers, and put one next to my bed so that I have a light within reach (and also a place to leave/charge my phone on top of it). I decided to reverse the position of the keyboard and the dresser so that I can still put the TV on top of it and have it at an angle that’s more viewable from my desk and my bed (and which also doesn’t mess up the orientation of the speakers).
I tried the bed in the other orientation, but then I remembered the problem I had when I tried a similar layout in 2006 - there isn’t enough chair space to have the desk there if the bed is facing the other way).
It just occured to me now that I could try the keyboard against the other radiator (basically rotate it 90°), which might free up a little more space, like if I wanted to put the DVD shelf against that wall, and then put the lamp on top of it, instead of having one of the tupperware drawers there. This would then allow me to put the bed centered, rather than against the wall (which, again, might not allow enough chair space).
After a couple more adjustments, I came up with this modification. I think I’m getting really close here…infact, now that my chair is moved over, I can probably rotate that bed again. Hmm…it makes the space in front of my keyboard kind of tight, but I use a foldup chair when sitting there, which takes up less space than my desk chair. It also means moving my DVD bookshelf to the right side of the sliding doors. Nah, scratch that whole plan.
The IKEA catalogue makes it look deceptively easy.
I’m glad I could inspire you. I hope you manage to piece it together.
Something I’ve noticed is that if I don’t have a window within my eyeline when I am lying in bed, I get antsy and can’t sleep comfortably. Strange but true.
I live on the first floor, so there’s a good view into my room from the street if I don’t have the blinds down. Yesterday I had them open because I was watching the snow storm, and every 5 minutes or so I felt someone staring in. I also have a pretty thick set of curtains for when I want total darkness (or need to warm up a bit more, since they do a really good job of keeping cold air out)
On the other hand, I don’t want to totally cover them, because at times I DO like light getting into the room.
Looking good! I like that you’ve moved the bed just a tad away from the wall - that’s all you really need to be able to do to make it, anyway.
And this way the TV is visible from pretty much anywhere in the room.
What about putting the keyboard next to your bed, where you’ve got that bookcase. Might that give you better chair-placing room? There’s still the issue of a lamp, if you could fit one on top of the keyboard? (I don’t know how yours is configured), and of course that would put it away from the radiator. If you liked that option, a wall-mounted or floor-standing lamp would solve the need for a reading light.
Of course, I’m not completely sure where to put the bookcase then - if it’s not too tall, it could go in front of the radiator. Or between the TV chest and armoire (might impede a drawer though).
We’ve just about decided to get a gooseneck-type floor-standing lamp for my son’s room. His nightstand is pretty low to the ground, and a standard lamp simply doesn’t sit high enough for him to be able to use it to read. That might be an option for you (though I know you’re not eager to be buying more stuff) if otherwise you liked having the keyboard near the bed.
BTW, you’ll be happy to hear that the group I donated that extra furniture to is Hopes Place, a housing works for autism. I used to have a floor-standing lamp, which I kept in the corner behind where the door swings open, but the switch for it broke off a couple years ago.
Well 2 more days to go, and then we start painting, and I’ll be arranging the room on Monday!
Well, the project is nearly done. Painted yesterday, came out beautifully. I used Pledge Wood Revitalizer on the floor which made it look good as new too. I moved the furniture in, and am working on the small stuff now. Still have a bunch of stuff to sort out, but I’m really happy with how the room looks now, and I have SO MUCH extra room now. I found that putting the bureau flat against the wall fit and looked better but I otherwise mostly stuck to the plan we made.
Thanks. I think that the darker paint (White Peach) for the walls, with a lighter white for the wood trim looks much better than the old scheme, where it was reversed. My landlord was trying to convince me to hang curtains over the sliding doors, but that seems tacky to me.
My only concern now is that I might be overloading one of the outlets. It turns out that the 6 outlet fixture was actually a regular 2 outlet fixture with a splitter within the cover. I moved this to the outlet near the windows (which is on a different fuse than the other two outlets, and I don’t know if anything else is on that fuse – the fuse that my other 2 outlets, as well as the outlets in my roommate’s room, runs from has blown a couple times, but this one never has before), and I currently have an extension cord to my TV and DVD player, and my printer plugged into the top row, and my UPS (computer and 2 monitors), and my audio receiver plugged into the bottom row. I’ll occasionally have my scanner and an external harddrive plugged into the UPS as well. I haven’t noticed any problems thus far…but when the summer comes and my AC has to go in there, I’ll probably have to run some extension cords from the other side of the room.
