I needed to take some photos of my bedroom today and it made me wonder what other Dopers’ bedrooms are like. They are fairly personal spaces and often an expression of ourselves.
My room is bright and colourful and I have tried to radiate happiness and warmth through the colours, materials and pictures. I love fairies and angels and so they hang around on all the walls. I have a mosquito net around my bed and two big windows which let lots of light in.
Pretty much the opposite of yours. Its painted a muted green and has Ethan Allen New Impressions furniture and Calvin Klein Acacia bed linens. The art is a combination of photos of the kids and Asian inspired silk hangings.
My (our) room is now a pretty shade of golden yellow–it’s called Clare de Lune (of all things). The trim is a soft white, the carpet beige/neutral. The Roman shades are a dark moss green and the comforter (duvet) on the king size bed is a pretty chintz floral pattern of deep burnt red parrot tulips, moss green stems, golden flowers and some small pale blue ones (I’m too lazy to get up and see what kind of flowers they are) on a cream background. It gets some morning sun, but mostly western. In late afternoon, in summer, the room glows. I just finished this room about a year ago. The furniture is dark-a cherry finish, a sleigh bed, wardrobe and 2 dressers, a walk in closet and “en suite” (what we call a master bath here). The bath is nothing like this English country home bedroom–that’s all funky and urban (I’m somewhat eclectic).
I have prints on the walls: a Whistler (of 3 sisters, all in the same burnt orange/red dress), a Wyeth landscape, photos of Canada and other landscapes, a print of a beach at sunrise–in all sepia colors (it’s a Victorian artist, cannot recall name just now) and one abstract original entitled “Dancing in the Dark”.
I used to want blue and white, but I like this so much now, I think I’ll stick with it for several years.
Our bedroom is slightly bigger than a walk in closet. Too small to decorate. The bed is walled in on 3 sides and we have two dressers and a little end table for the ash tray and radio. There’s a big fan in front of the closet door. It’s a hideous set up. Undoubtedly the worst room in the house.
Our bedroom just got picked up on Sunday, so it’s nice again. All the clothes and blankets and assorted junk put away, finally!
We own a 1941 Cape Cod style house, and the bedroom is the southeast half of the upstairs (left side in that picture), with a skylight on one side and a bump-out with nice windows on the other. You can look up out of the skylight while lying in bed. It gets a lot of sunlight. This is what the room looked like empty; our bed is pushed up against that bunk, blocking and hiding those two drawers on the right. We still have the eight huge drawers on the left. Here’s another angle, looking towards the bump-out, again taken before we moved in. The walls are covered with wood paneling (the nasty 1970’s kind, which we hope to change someday soon).
We have one of these quilts. We have Baluch area rugs (similar to this) on the floor. There is a small bookshelf, currently housing all the Terry Pratchett and Diana Wynne Jones books I have, as they fit there; the rest of my books are in my office. There’s a beat-up plain antique chest of my husband’s, full of bedding, with an unused comforter on top where kitties sit in the sun, and this picture on the wall. There are two coat trees, one for each of us to hang sweaters and other clothes on. There is a teeny, tiny half bathroom with a Ming Green toilet and matching sink.
There is lots of sand on the quilt and on the rugs, because we take our dog Ben to a local beach frequently. This ought to drive me nuts, but it doesn’t; I guess because it’s so obvious that Ben is deliriously happy when he gets to go to the beach.
Eleanor and I could comfortably swap rooms and probably not much notice. Except if she needed to pee, since we don’t have our own bathroom in there. Same colors on the walls, carpet, drapes and trim, nearly identical furniture but ours is a lighter wood. Our comforter colors are even close, just differently patterned.
Except for the books. Whereas some people decorate wall space with lovely art, we tend to see it as storage. There are 6 four foot shelves halfway up one corner over the end table. There’s a 6 foot high skinny bookcase tucked near the door, two 3 foot high skinny bookcases bookending the dresser and a lovely early American garage sale 6 foot wide milk crates and planks bookcase under the windows.
Nice! And the books are in the closet, on the shelves where I hear tell other people put boxes of extra clothes etc. (they’re also in the study, the living room, the basement and all the kids’ rooms…)
I like your “funky” upstairs, emma--I like Cape Cods (I live in a modified one).
Hereis a picture immediately after my mom and I finished painting the room; we have some statues and candles on the top wall shelf and a small fan on the lower one, and books, and alarm clock and various other things on that nightstand table thingy. We also have more pillows. We still haven’t found artwork for the walls, though. This photo makes the red look brighter than it is and the other walls are more brown than it looks.
It’s a very small room. We have a tiny dresser just to the left of where the picture was taken from, which is more-or-less the doorway. Tiny corner closet just off to the left, though a fairly large closet at the end of the bed. Window is to the right of the bed.
I’d rather not post pictures. I have a foot wide path from my door to the bed. The rest of the room is completely filled with junk and boxes. I just moved into the place and in a rush to get the house cleaned for my daughter’s first birthday, everything got thrown into my bedroom. But it would look quite nice if I could get the get up and go to clean it.
Very light silver-grey walls, black furniture, white ceiling/door/trim, with crimson accents. Very modern, clean lines and all that jazz. I’m something of a minimalist so I don’t like a lot of ornamentation and prefer sleek functionality, and my room (when not a huge mess) reflects that.
I share the room with my girlfriend. Queen sized bed in the center of the room, two dressers, a stand mirror, and a jewelry cabinet cover two of the walls. Computer desk in the corner, where I spend most of my hours when not at work. Two clothes baskets of dirty clothes, one of clean clothes make it impossible to walk around the bed. Pile of clothes that I have no idea the cleanliness status of covering the rest of the floor (Girlfriend is not a fan of folding clothes, and I refuse to pick up things that aren’t mine, especially if I paid and took the time to wash them).
There’s a clear path between the door, the desk, and the bed. It’s an apartment, so the walls are the standard boring off-white that dully reflect the single yellow light bulb above. Double sized window on the far wall covered in blinds, because we are on the sub level and opening the blinds gives everyone who walks by a perfect view of everything inside. Closet with scuffed up off-white doors that can barely stay closed due to all of the misc objects stored inside.
Small. Off-white walls, a walk in closet, and just enough room for a king sized bed, and side tables on either side. Two original paintings on the walls, one an abstract cityscape and the other a rustic scene. Next place we buy I’m definately not settling for a small bedroom.
I miss the bedroom I grew up in - it was a converted library, about 18 feet wide with built in bookcases, a bay window, a fireplace with two armchairs and a chess table in front.
