I have a medium-sized master bedroom. Walls are boring cream; I need to paint but it will probably stay boring cream as I mostly decorate with quilts and they change. We each get a teeny walk-in closet. I have a set of four quilts hanging on two of the walls, but I’m getting tired of them. Only I don’t want to sew four more! The bed currently has the winter quilt, which is dark blues, greens, and reds on cream, but I’ll change it soon to the spring/fall quilt, which is blue-greens with a bit of yellow. I have a bookcase headboard that is full of books, a couple of dressers, and a wooden chest, all in darkish wood (though not a set). Um, what else–yet another quilt on the chest, but it’s covered with a pile of half-clean clothing. A Japanese fan, a Celtic embroidery,a religious picture, a small ~20’s painting of a couple walking by a river, a wedding photo. Plus a bunch of clutter on top of the dressers that I’m always trying and failing to control. There ya go.
The luxury of our bedroom is that it is empty.
Clean, no room voor messy stuff. It’s all painted in whitish yellow. There’s our bed, free of comforters, quilts, pillows or stuffed toys. There’s a little ikea nightstand on each side of the bed. A built in closet, a window with floor length white curtains to the garden on one side, to the family bathroom on the other side. Less then 10 family pictures grouped together on one wall. Bare white wooden floors. A bare wooden chair for each of us to put worn clothes on. That’s it. I read somewhere that to give rest, a bedroom should not distract you, it should be boring.
When we give the baby his morning bottle in our bed, he can play on the floor afterwards and strew it temporarily from his chest of toy stuff, that is also in our room. The other toy chest is in the living room.
The room is about 12x14. I have a full-size bed, a 36 in tv which sits on a stand in the opp corner of my bed, on each sides of the tv are 2 small tables - one of which (left side) has the xbox 360 and digital cable box and the other has my flatscreen computer monitor, my chair sits next to my bed and has an ottoman, my pc box acts as my mouse pad (perfect height), and behind my chair is my closet which hides my dresser and other crap… The walls are yellow. Closet has folding+sliding wooden doors (the kind that are usually in horror movies where you can barely peek out from inside). My wall has some random posters, but is minimal. Oh. My mini-fridge is next to the small table which holds the xbox. Oh, and A/C is is in the window, but the window is covered with a patterned material to keep out light and unwanted eyes. Lastly, computers speakers’ subwoofer is under the monitor’s table and the speakers are scattered around the room. Finally, I have a small glass table (not a table, but it’s piece of glass about 6in x 20 in fixed to the wall) just above the left side of my bed for easy reach when in bed (keys, phone, etc).
To say the least, my room is very comfortable…
The walls are stark white; I live in an apartment and painting just wasn’t practical when I knew we weren’t going to be here long. It is narrow with two closets on one short end, and a window in the other. The blinds are broken and a light from outside shines right onto my bed.
I share with a roommate. We have two beds, two dressers, a desk, a hope chest, and a night stand crammed into a space that wasn’t meant for all that stuff. It is always messy. Always. Messy.
My bed has a light yellow with blue flowers sheets & comforter set; my room-mate has a purple and green quilt on her bed. I have a beta fish named Confucius on my desk.
On the walls are my green shelves with various knick-knacks on them; I have two posters, one of the Lady of Shallot, the other… I’ve forgotten. Another medieval lady. My room-mate has band posters on her wall.
We’re moving out in a few months. I can’t wait.
We just redid the bedroom, so I’m happy to share a picture of it. Brand new carpet, new furniture, and freshly painted walls make it serene and calm. I haven’t put the pictures back on the wall yet, since I’m not sure how I want to go about it, but I’ll probably be adding a fair number of family photos to the left of the bed and the opposite wall (next to my dresser). I also need to find something nice to put over the bed. It’s a vaulted ceiling, so there’s a good bit of space up there. Maybe a couple of botanical prints.
My bedroom…

[li]Four poster bed, whose bedframe I purchased at a second-hand shop about 18 years ago for $40. It’s a double (although I’d like to have a queen size) and right now has the Spring/Summer cover on it–a mainly red cabbage roses on a cream color background. (My Fall/Summer cover is heavier and is more green based.) I sleep with four pillows, but there are an extra set of decorative pillows, plus one neckroll pillow for after I make my bed. Although they’re pretty pillows, I actually USE them, especially when I’m reading or watching television in bed.[/li][li] A square side table that I purchased at the Salvation Army for $10. It has an old leather top and a shelf underneath. On the table sits an Asian lamp (garage sale so long ago, I can’t remember what I paid for it), my tiny alarm clock (that I never use), my coaster (for my water glass), a tissue box, and a glass box that contains pieces of dark chocolate. there’s a wicker trash can between the table and the bed.[/li][li] A wood television cabinet that I purchased at Home Depot and Hallboy and I assembled. I stained it a light oak, then hated the color, so I dry brushed red latex paint over the stain, so now it’s a dark red, which I love. It houses my television and all my “adult” books. On top of that sits a plant.[/li][li] A radiator cover that sits under one of the three windows. On top of the cover is a small red lamp I purchased at Kirklands which is more decorative than useful (very low watt bulb only). On the window above the radiator cover (facing north) is a dark red heavy Roman shade, and on the other two windows (facing east) are dark red velvet drapes that keep out the cold in the winter and the heat in the summer. They match both the winter and the summer bed covers. In the summer, the window air conditioner goes into the window with the Roman shade.[/li][li] In the corner is a large plant that hides in my room over the winter and is patiently waiting for the weather to warm up so it can move to the front porch. Aside the radiator cover are two spider plants in holders which are also waiting to move. (During the day, I open the curtains and raise the Roman shade to allow the sun to come in.) I have a basket next to my closet in which I put my dirty clothes. It used to be a plant basekt, so it’s not terribly large, which is okay, since I hate having a basket of dirty clothes anywhere. [/li][li] There is not a dresser in my room, since the one small closet has been fitted with shelves where I keep my clothing (socks, underwear, tee-shirts, pajamas, hosiery, scarves, workout clothes) in plastic bins, since that’s easier than a dresser where I can’t see anything. On one of the closet shelves, I have all my jewelry and stuff (like a dressing table). In the hall closet outside of my bedroom, there’s a lot of space for all my hanging clothes and shoes and sweaters.[/li][li] On the floor is a neutral carpet, but I wish I could rip it up and have the bare wood and maybe an area rug, but since it’s a rental, that’s not happening. [/li][li] It’s a neat and clean room–I try to vaccuum every week (to keep the cat hair at bay, even though they’re not allowed in my room–I can’t sleep with kitty fur clogging up my sinuses) and dust when I can (which is about every week). Like the rest of the house, I like things in their place.[/li]On the walls, I have paintings, an etching, a framed acceptance letter for an essay I wrote (and won honarable mention), a framed letter for “40 Under Forty” acceptance letter when I won that award, my framed Associate’s degree (which means more to me than my Bachelors degree), and a framed SCA map.

My room is…strange.
As I’ve mentioned before, I (29) share a room with my niece (17). This was not supposed to be the case when I moved in but she had problems with her mom and came to live with us.
Anyway, my room is tiny. We have one window. The bed is a bunk bed. I get the bottom (full size) bunk and my niece gets the top (twin size) bunk.
I will post pics, as soon as I clean it. Currently I have an unmade bed and a very large amount of clean clothes on my floor.
I hate my bed. My niece has pretty much moved out. She hasn’t been home since winter vacation (in early Feb). I want to get rid of the bunk bed and buy a real bed. Even when she does come home, I work nights and I’m willing to timeshare a bed if it means I stop hitting my head on the top bunk, and my feet stop hanging off the end (cripes! I’m only 5’2", I should be able to fit on the bed).
Anyway, I do actually love my room. I like smaller rooms and I don’t like a lot of stuff so I am happy with not having lots of places to put things. I LOVE my bedding. I have one of those foam pads to help cushion the crappy bunk bed mattresses. My sheet set is plain white (either 300 or 400 tc) and my comforter is also white (Sealy Down Alternative - so damn soft, so comfy, so warm). My two main pillows are soft and squishy and have white covers. My other two pillows are soft and firm and have mint green covers. Between the sheets and the comforter, I have a mint green, soft, thin blanket and I have another mint green fuzzy blanket for on top of the comforter (I like green, did you notice?). I also have my blue great-grandma blanket (great-grandma made it for me when I was still incubating. Had it ever since). I got my niece new bedding for her birthday (maroon and black) and since she’s never home and I refuse to look at her unmade bed, I made it up all nice and neat and it stays that way!
Anyway, that’s my room. As soon as it’s clean, I’ll post pics.
Well in my defense last September I started to clean out my walk-in closet and got about half-way done and then got bored. And I never got back around to finishing.
All I do is sleep and change clothes in there so the clutter doesn’t really bother me.
There are days when I get in the mood to clean it up but luckily those moments soon pass and I go back to playing WoW.
What paint did you use? Love the color.
My bedroom is actually pretty impersonal. Couple of nice walnut bookcases, a television that I almost never use, a bedside table that’s on the wrong side of the bed (if I have the table on the side of the bed I sleep on, I’d have to push the bed into the corner, making it impossible to change the sheets). Decorations are limited to an Erin go Bragh flag on the wall, and a couple of framed drawings from friends of mine. I don’t put much effort into decorating the bedroom because most of the time I’m in there, the lights are out and I’m unconscious. Seems a bit like a waste to pretty it up too much.
Ours is mainly the same off-white that the whole house was covered in when it was built 20 years ago. If you look at it sideways, you can see the touch-ups covering old nail holes. It’s one-half of a “cathedral” ceiling - the outside wall is the usual 8 feet, but the inside wall is 14 feet tall, and the ceiling slopes accordingly.
The bathroom area is hotel style - the sink is directly open to the bedroom, and the toilet and shower were behind a door. (We took the door off because it was ridiculous - to close the door, you either had to get inside the shower or stand on the toilet.) We hate the hotel style open look, and have plans of putting a wall and door to separate the entire bathroom from the bedroom.
The carpet is a horrid light beige that looks every bit of 20 years old. There’s a permanent gray fringe around the edges from years of previous owners who don’t know how to use a vacuum cleaner, and it’s got some waves and lumps. If we really wanted to, we could have it re-stretched, which would have a bonus effect of cutting off the permanently dirty edges.
The curtains are sage green, and the furniture is predominately Ikea’s “Leksvik” line - one of their relatively few lines that’s made of solid wood, rather than particle board and laminates. The scale is good for cozy apartments, but in this larger room, it’s a bit lost and we have “someday” plans to replace it.
It’s a small dorm room with a desk, wardrobe, bed, cabinet, one large window, and an air conditioning/heating unit. It’s part of four rooms that all share a common area with a kitchen and two bathrooms.
I don’t like people judging me based on my stuff, so I haven’t put up anything that would give away my personality (like posters and other art work.)
This plan backfired when people started assuming that I have no personally based on my empty room. :smack:
Pile of laundry in one corner, IKEA bookshelf by the door. 3 Tiffany style lamps, one floor lamp and two small ones on the nightstand and dresser. Cozy.
Oh, and this over the queen sized bed.
I’m a single nerd which means that my room is one of those man-child wonderlands that come from having a decent amount of disposable income and nothing to hold me back.
It’s the large master bedroom in my place. White walls with an extra high ceiling. The carpet is that weak tan that you use when you just want “generic carpet”. The room is divided in terms of wall decorations; two walls have plenty but the wall that my bed lies against lack them. The reason for this is that I tend to shuffle around in my sleep and I don’t want to kick anything off the wall onto me while I’m sleeping.
My bed is a small trundle bed tucked into a corner with a simple black comforter over it. The color wasn’t chosen for the decor but because I didn’t want anything with a pattern on it and I didn’t like the other colors available. That’s going to be kind of a theme in the furnishing. Beside it I have a double sided motel lamp purchased at the same time I got the bed.
Next to that is a tall antique maple dresser. It has eight drawers and is about five feet tall. The top two drawers are for socks and underwear while the rest holds my DVD collection. At least the parts of the DVD collection that haven’t overflowed that space (another reoccurring theme). The top of the dresser has most of my superhero figurines.
There are four bookshelves in my room. Two six foot tall pressboard ones picked up at $15 each that cover up the window in my room so I don’t get a lot of light inside when I sleep. There’s a homemade oak one that is also six foot tall and an antique oak cabinet with a sliding glass door. All of these are filled to overflowing with books; one high bookself packed with comic trades and half of the sliding cabinet contains my RPG collection. On top of the cabinet are more figures but more general SF and fantasy things like the big Cthulhu, wind up Gort and Bender, and my set of Evangelion units. My full sized gumball machine also sits on top of that and it has about $150 in it waiting for me to finish off the rest of the gum before I cash it in.
Then there’s my computer desk, a modernist glass and metal thing that I can’t stand but it was a gift (I used to have a school teacher’s desk from the 50’s that I thought was great but someone thought that I liked things made of tubes, glass, and metal). My PC is an open framed box and I use a 21" CRT monitor along with a classic PS/2 clicky keyboard. Above the desk are a few framed animation cels and a personalized autographed picture of Sarah Michelle Geller (another gift, albeit one with a bit more thought behind it than the desk).
My desk chair looks a lot like something from the bridge of the Enterprise from Star Trek: TNG. Same shade, same pattern in the material. Oddly enough that might be the nerdiest thing in my room that’s there by coincidence. I didn’t select it for that reason.
I have a pine coffee table in the middle of the room. The top opens up on springs and inside I store game controllers.
My AV set up is just as chaotic as everything else in the room. A stereo rack holds my game consoles and subwoofer. An antique dresser (longer and lower than the other one) holds my television, DVD player, Tivo, and digital audio decoder. The drawers here are packed with my video games. Beside that set up is a wire rack that used to just hold a few figures but has been given over to holding more books. Above the television is a movie poster for MST3k.
Thanks, I like it. It’s Ace Hardware paint, I think it was called “Buckhead Hills”.
I’d say my living room is a much better expression of myself than my bedroom. I’m guessing you’re living with your family at the moment, which limits your personal expression to your bedroom.
I live in a weaver’s cottage which is a brick terraced house with an open plan top floor which was originally where the weaving work was done. This room is our bedroom so it’s quite large for a bedroom. it’s a rectangle which we’ve ‘divided’ into two squares. one is bookshelves and a sofa, and the other is our bedroom and associated furniture. The decor is very neutral but I have a thing for bright coloured duvet covers so it means the bedroom gets a fresh look every few weeks when I change the bedding!
My bedroom has wood paneling and, where the walls aren’t paneled, it’s white. We have the bed in there, of course, and on either side we have storage trunks we use as nightstands. Mine has an angel my husband gave me when I was in the hospital, usually a book I’m in the middle of reading, and recently a mother-of-pearl urn with some of my mother’s ashes. We have a TV in the bedroom, and our computer (it’s actually a fairly large room). But, perhaps most importantly, we have our three parrots with us, too. So the whole flock of us sleep in one place (which the parrots definitely like) although the parrots sleep in cages instead of beds.
We both slightly on the slob side so it’s not very neat, but while it’s cluttered we do dust and vacuum and such.
I currently have the most peculiar bedroom I’ve ever had. I live on the second floor of one of those classic Montreal triplexes (by which we mean a three-story building in which each storey is a separate dwelling) - long, narrow, built in the 20s, tiny back yard, hardwood floors, curving exterior staircase - and even for one of those my bedroom is quirky.
I imagine it must have originally been two different bedrooms, because there are two doors leading to separate sections that are joined by a big open space (not sure what the right term is) that looks like a doorframe for French doors (without any hardware) - it has a lintel and stubs of walls that come out a foot or so into the room.
The room itself is also shaped strangely. At the south end at the head of my bed (the wall over the back yard), the wall slants inward to accommodate the large window in my living room. In the middle (right where the cut-open wall is), there is a protrusion corresponding to a small, decorative semicircular alcove (about two and a half feet in diameter) in my living room. (We keep a sculpture in it.)
The closet is also strange and I suspect it is a part of the bedroom that was walled off. It’s quite large; the inner wall slopes inward to accommodate the strange shape of our front hallway. The small closet of my office (to the north) protrudes into it, but, bizarrely, the back wall of that closet extends beyond the edge of the closet, creating a strange, six-inch-deep “pocket.”
Anyway, the south half of my bedroom is where my bed is. My bedstead is a family heirloom, a hand-lathed spindle bedstead made from birdseye maple by my dad well before I was thought of. My bed linens are red and are topped with a duvet cover with a burgundy-on-red floral curlicue pattern.
On either side of the head of the bed is a bedside table with lamps and (to the east) my cell phone charger and alarm clock (the latter of which I’ve had since I was ten - they don’t make electronics like they used to). Over each of them is a framed reproduction, one of the Sagrada Familia, one of “Homage to Will Grohmann” by Wassily Kandinsky. Those are on either side of the window, which is directly over my bed; I have two layers (one gauzy, one opaque) of curtains, red to match the bedspread.
To the west of my bed are my bookcases (2), with the top shelf being given over to an assortment of curios, and my altar, with a tapestry by my grandmother over it. To the east (on the slanting wall) is a wall lamp and a reproduction by Norval Morrisseau. Over the lintel is a cowrie shell belt my dad brought back from Congo, and the semicircular protrusion is decorated with a hanging scarf.
The northern half of the room is my dressing/art area. It’s dominated by my desk (huge and red), also made by my dad, which is perpetually covered in paper and flotsam of various types. That’s against the west wall. To the southeast is my easel, concealing a broken chair with piles of clothes and detritus on it. To the northwest is my dresser. There are usually clothes hampers in the middle of the room. The closet has mirrored sliding doors that conceal a multitude of sins, and in the middle of the room is a pull chain lamp.
Over the desk is a large map of the London Underground; over the door is a Montreal metro direction panel. The semicircular protrusion has a Pet Shop Boys concert poster and a canvas I did about seven years ago. Over the closet door is a painting by my friend from Winnipeg and to its right is an original 1980s Montreal metro map on metal.
It’s large and kind of impersonal with nothing on the walls and ugly cheapish furniture. If it weren’t for the bedspread, a pink stripey job from Ikea, and the seperate bureau/shelving system I have devoted to my makeup, you’d assume a guy lived there.
My whole apartment is like that, I guess. I feel uncomfortable spending money on things like nice furniture when I should be putting it in my 401K or cashing up (which is what I do instead). I also don’t care that much about furniture and home decorating (although I do have a style that I like).
