calling wine buffs

Personally speaking I wouldn’t know a Bordeaux from a claret. When I buy wine it’s usually supermarket stuff at about £6-10 per bottle. It’s rare that I get anything more expensive.

Anyway, a few days ago I obtained a few bottles of wine. 8 different types. Some of them have price labels on them, some don’t. One is labeled £21.50, which if accurate would be the most expensive wine I’ve ever had. Another is labeled £15.

I’d like to know if I’ve got some good stuff that should be saved for a special occasion, ordinary stuff that I can drink next time I’m thirsty, or expensive stuff that I can put on eBay. How much is it worth? Drink it on it’s own? serve with food? what kind of food?

Here’s what I got:

1991 Chateau-Chalon, Vin jeune de Grande Garde
2002 Puligny-Montrachet, Domaine Gauffroy Marc
2004 Rioja Vega, Blanco
2002 Alforja, La Mancha
2000 Tradition, Domaine Morel Thibaut, Cotes De Jura
2000 Chardonnay, Arbois-Pupillin
2002 Roux Pere& Fils, Saint-Veran
Puligny-Montrachet, Les Enseignieres, Henri Prudhon & Fils. (no year on the label)

It would help if you can direct me to a good website that lists prices for wines. I may be able to obtain more bottles from the same source at a later date.

1991 Chateau-Chalon, Vin jeune de Grande Garde

Red Bordeaux (aka claret). 1991 wasn’t a gret year and it’s going to way past its best.

2002 Puligny-Montrachet, Domaine Gauffroy Marc

Decent quality white Burgundy, but nothing extra special

2002 Alforja, La Mancha

La Mancha is not traditionally an area for making good wine. I’d guess this is pretty bland Spanish plonk.

2004 Rioja Vega, Blanco

Pretty ordinary white Rioja

2000 Tradition, Domaine Morel Thibaut, Cotes De Jura

I’m going to guess that’s a white wine. If it is, that’s the most interesting wine of the bunch. If I’m right, then it’s actually a Vin Jaune (it might say this on the label). A very peculiar wine - almost sherry like.

2000 Chardonnay, Arbois-Pupillin

Another wine from the Jura, but nothing special

2002 Roux Pere& Fils, Saint-Veran

Another Chardonnay from the general Burgundy area, but made in one of the lesser villages.

Puligny-Montrachet, Les Enseignieres, Henri Prudhon & Fils. (no year on the label)

That’s a decent quality white Burgundy (Chardonnay) . That’s probably the most expensive wine - I’d guess around £25 a bottle.

Puligny Montrachet is a very good area. I went there about 15 years ago; the wine was heavenly. Here’s the Gauffroys web page; here’s the Prudhon’s.

Prices for the 2002 and 2004 Les Enseignieres.

Saint Veran is very nice. We had this for my father’s 80th. Inexpensive.

2002 was a very good year in Burgundy.
