My Congressman has publically joined 20 other Republicans in the House of Reps in stating he would vote for a clean resolution with no extortion adders to destroy Obamacare to get the government funded.
I’m wondering if he and the others could rid America of the Tea Party scourge by threatening Boehner they will switch party and caucus with the Dems if Boehner refuses to put a clean CR on the floor for a vote which will pass.
And as part of the threat to switch, the debt ceiling must be raised without the Tea Party’s extremist demands or wouldn’t it be great to see seventeen to twenty Republicans join 200 Democrats in returning sanity to our government.
Hardly likely if not impossible, I know, but wouldn’t that be a classic way out of the mess the Republicans have been so eager to put our country through just to try to kill Obamacare.
Wishful thinking. You might as well just wish that everyone agrees with you all the time. Or that the opposing sports team will just forfeit. Or that your boss will give you a raise for no reason.
They won’t caucus with the Democrats because that would mean the Democrats would gain control of all of the committees (and I am not overly familiar with the rules of the House, but it could even result in Pelosi becoming Speaker again), and there’s no way any of them wouldn’t have a majority of existing Democrats (just in case one of the “turncoats” “comes to his senses”) as a result. The Tea Party types know this.
Shit, I wish that every day.
The Republicans have made over forty attempts to repeal Obamacare legally and failed every time. Why should they be indulged now because they’ve taken the country hostage? And if they are indulged and given what they can’t achieve legally, why would they hesitate to use the same threat again?
I’d be happy to watch Boehner and Ted Cruz both shit their pants if a couple of Repubs went public with a threat to flip the House back to Nancy.
Wouldn’t that kill the Tea Party when all Republucans could see it was their extremists loons that cost the GOP the House.
I’m not saying it has to actually come about in order to force Boehner to end this madness. Just the threat that some Republicans were considering a move like that would open the givernment in short order.
A majority of the House can bring a vote to the floor without the consent of the Speaker, so your scenario doesn’t really make sense. 20 GOP House members could join with the Dems to bring a clean CR to the floor without going to the extremes of unseating Boehner and leaving their caucus.
Perhaps you are unaware that all 435 members of the U.S. House were elected to office by their constituants. Not all of their constituants are Obama or ObamaCare supporters.
Reid and the Democrats in the U.S. Senate are not currently willing to meet with the Republicans to find compromise that could/would reopen the federal government. SSDD.
“Yeah, you guys, just undo your own agenda and replace it with ours! You know- compromise!”
If neither side is talking, how do you expect them to resolve this, or any, issue?
I’m not entirely sure about that. The Tea Partiers probably thought the threat of a government shutdown would get them what they wanted. We seem to have entered an era when those sorts of bluffs get called.
And if only one side is talking, it still doesn’t work. Both sides need to talk to resolve things.
Here’s the (only slightly tongue-in-cheek) Republican ransom note for the debt ceiling. All kidding aside, just what are the Republicans offering the Democrats in terms of compromise?
I think the tax on medical devices is a compromise for those GOP from far right districts where even this concession might mean a primary challenge.
The rest of the “compromises” offered are really not compromises at all because they amount to gutting Obamacare – even delaying the individual mandate without some way to compensate insurance companies. I’m not even really pro-individual mandate but simply changing it alone is unworkable.
I expect the negotiations to happen within the derelict party–namely, the sane Republicans need to be negotiating internally to find a way to stop knuckling under to the Tea Party. They’re the ones who caused this mess, and if they allow the Tea Party to salvage anything whatsoever from the mess, it’s kicking the can down the road.
No. The Democrats shouldn’t negotiate. Let the Republicans clean up their mess and return to the table once they’re no longer controlled by economic jihadists.
Yes, I think we’re all aware that there are some people out there who don’t support Obama or Obamacare. They’ve certainly made their presence known.
But here’s the reality check - there was a vote and their side lost. Obama was elected by a majority and Obamacare was enacted by a majority. So now these guys need to put on their big boy pants and move on.
Well, there you have it. Situation solved.
Or rather, the Democrats already negotiated, and it didn’t work.
Are you saying that the Republicans are so incompetent that they can’t clean up their own mess, and that Democrats must save them from themselves?
I don’t believe you. Republicans must, and can, get their own house in order. Once they do so, and once they stop holding the nation hostage nad pretending that’s what a negotiation is, they can come back to the table.
The time for negotiation was when both sides could go to conference and the Republicans refused. Both sides negotiated on the content of the bill. Now certain elements within the GOP just don’t know when they’ve been beaten. They’re just going to have to learn the hard way, much to the consternation of the rest of the party.
