Can a needle biopsy spread a cancer?

i just found this board, thanks all.
i have heard that a needle biopsy can spread a cancer if it contacts a cancer cell. this seems plausable, but i am not a biologist. my dr. wants to do a biopsy of my prostate and i am reticent about invasive procedures that can do more harm than good. thanks alot!

yes it’s possible Cite

Oops, hit submit too soon.

I meant to also mention that the incidence is very low. If you read the abstract linked, there were over 2100 biopsies, approx 500 were cancerous and of those 5 had perineal seeding from the biopsy needle.

There are risks with everything in medicine. It is important to weigh risks and benefits with your physician who knows you, your prostate and the procedure much more thoroughly than I do. Also be sure to consider the alternative of NOT getting the biopsy. And weigh those risks against the risk of seeding.

It won’t be a pleasant experience, and won’t take long. Consider the risk of not knowing if you have the big C vs. the pretty low risk of spreading a cancer that’s already there!
