Can winners in the two major United States lotteries (Mega Millions and Powerball) remain anonymous including methods such as claiming the prize through an attorney?
Only in five states: Delaware, Kansas, Maryland, North Dakota, and Ohio. All other participating states require lottery winners to be disclosed as a matter of public record.
Here is a recent (and lengthy) thread on the topic.
A friend’s SIL won a quarter million in an Ontario lottery (okay, that’s not the US) and was given the choice to remain anonymous, which she chose. Fifteen minutes later the phone calls from charities started and didn’t let up for a day. And a quarter million is hardly a grand prize.
