I thought it was mentioned a few times – to go home earlier. If you have 8 hours of work to do per day and you spend 30-60 minutes at lunch, then you extend your work day to 8.5 - 9 hours. Personally, I may prefer the mid-day break, but I wouldn’t consider those that don’t as insane or irrational.
Mandatory vacation is part of internal controls required in some industries, and good practice for anyone who could take money. It’s not so much that your employer doesn’t trust you. It’s that they need to make sure that nobody has an opportunity to perpetuate an embezzlement scheme. I once was involved in a case where an employee managed to embezzle millions of dollars from a company. The scheme was discovered when the employee finally took a vacation.
I work in retail. We are on our feet for 8 hours…no sitting down. I look forward to that half-hour break as a gift from above every day. If I don’t eat, I walk the mall, do errands, sit in the bathroom, read…doze. I work from 9am to 5:30…no big deal. Salaried managers (at my other retail job) were required to work 45-60 hours a week.
Why can’t you approach your boss and ask if you could each have a choice between being salaried, and being hourly? That way everyone could be happy…and those of you who can’t see the value of a bathroom break or of not bolting down your food can work straight through if you like…
