Can anybody explain why Kindle books sometimes have sales tax?

I understand that merchandise from a merchant with a presence in my state has a sales tax. Also, I assume that because Amazon has a distribution center in my state, anything shipped from there will have a sales tax added.

What I fail to understand is why sometimes Kindle eBooks, sent wirelessly to my device, should have a sales tax added.

I am further bewildered that only some of these books have the tax, while others don’t. I searched Amazon’s Help files, but no explanation found there.

Anybody explain what is going on?

It would help to know what state you are in.

In Washington state, all digital products are subject to sales tax - with such a broad definition that even VOIP services like Vonage are now charging sales tax. A WA resident would only not pay sales tax if the vendor was out of state.

Whoops, sorry. Arizona.

They also have a list of states in which different merchants charge sales tax. One large publisher that charges sales tax on Arizona purchases is Macmillan. Penguin and HarperCollins charge sales tax in all states.
