I sold my rental properties, none of which I lived in, last year. My current insurance company allowed me to have an umbrella as long as I had a renter’s policy. (I live with my fella, and don’t pay rent but let’s pretend - I do buy groceries and pay for vacations). My agent has retired. I stayed with Farmers because I adored her. I’m shopping for less expensive auto insurance, and I want to buy a new umbrella and renter’s policy. I am being told nope, not without home ownership. Any thoughts?
Can anyone advise me of an insurance company that will allow me an umbrella when I don't own a home?
Who’s saying “nope”? If you have auto with Farmers, then you’re eligible for PUP.
It doesn’t appear she has both “auto and homeowners” so attaching a PUP rider to the auto policy seems unlikely.
You could consider getting a renters policy at your boyfriend’s address although I don’t know if he owns or rents his dwelling. If he has either a renters or HO policy, you could quality as an “additional insured”. At that point, your BF could get the PUP that would apply to your property. If he rents and has no insurance, consider a renters policy in both your names with the PUP rider attached. Something to consider.
No, but she does have auto and renter’s (or at least, is applying for renter’s). Farmer’s requires you to have 2 of auto, home or renter’s. It’s extremely unlikely anyone would have homeowner’s and renter’s - so parse that clause as “auto and (homeowners or renters)”.
I have auto and renter’s through Farmer’s; my apartment complex requires renter’s.
Sorry I wasn’t more clear. I currently have Farmers with auto and renters. I am looking for another company since my agent retired. Hoped someone would know and save me tons of research and phone calls.
You still haven’t said who said “nope”. Pretty much all the major (and smaller) insurers will offer you PUP if you take out one of auto or home owner’s insurance with them. If you really don’t want to do the research then call an insurance broker. But you’ll pay a premium for their service.
Why do you need an umbrella policy?
What sort of risks are you trying to insure against?
Do you drive your vehicle for work? Do you believe that your liability risks of driving your car are greater than the liability coverage that is provided with your auto policy?
I can understand when you were a landlord, having an umbrella policy made sense, but what are you doing now, that you feel that you need umbrella coverage?
I have renter’s insurance and an umbrella policy through Travelers.
I have auto, renter’s and personal property insurance through State Farm.
Sorry, had not been back, found one thru Safeco. I had spoken with several ill-informed people on insurance companies 800 numbers. Went thru an independent broker. Thanks!!
