Just finished the book, and I really enjoyed it. But there’s a few things I still don’t get- the major one being the purpose of the child sacrifices. Why? What did it gain Celia? And what was the Blade of Beaconfield’s real crime?

Just finished the book, and I really enjoyed it. But there’s a few things I still don’t get- the major one being the purpose of the child sacrifices. Why? What did it gain Celia? And what was the Blade of Beaconfield’s real crime?
Weren’t the sacrifices simply to gain power? It’s been a few months and memory fails. (I don’t remember anything about the Blade of Beaconfield.)
Enough threads were left hanging for there to be a sequel. Not sure if I’ll read it. I was about halfway through the book before I started caring about the main character. I get that it’s noir, but I still need to care.
