Can anyone explain what happened on last night's episode of "The Muskeeters"?

First of all: It’s a great show. Sort of “Game of Thrones” meets “Law & Order.”

Last night’s episode was about a five-year-old crime that left 18 Musketeers dead. Aramis was one of the survivors. When the full story became known…it didn’t seem to make any sense.

Spoilers ahead, of course.

Here’s what I got from it:

  • The Duke’s chancellor, Cluzet (sp?), was a Spanish spy in the court of Savoy.
  • Meanwhile, the Duke’s wife – the King’s sister – was spying on him for France.
  • The King thought Cluzet was going to expose his sister, and wanted to kidnap him before that happened.
  • The King (and Treville and Richelieu) sent 20 Musketeers on a training mission.
  • They then told or somehow leaked to the Duke that the 20 were actually out to depose the Duke and put his infant son on the Savoy throne.
  • The Duke sent killers to wipe out the Musketeers, taking out 18 of them.
  • That “distraction” somehow allowed someone unknown to successfully kidnap Cluzet.

Right away, that makes no sense. And it makes even less sense that the King and Richelieu thought the best “distraction” for the Duke was to inform him that they were sending Musketeers to kill him! Or were the Musketeers supposed to be “rogue”? Then why couldn’t the French take care of them?

Am I missing something?
