Can anyone I.D. this sci-fi story?

Please pardon my posting, but a couple of years back, in this GD thread, someone mentioned a science fiction story that they’d once read, but could’t remember the title of. The description was as follows:

Hmm, sounds a bit like Philip Jose Farmer’s Riverworld series, what with the powerful but unpresent aliens, free food, water, etc, and contraceptives in food. But that can’t be it, because someone else would have mentioned it by now, but I am curious to find out what it really is.

Nope, it’s definitely not Riverworld. Don’t know what it is, but I wanna read it. Sounds interesting. And like a good plan, come to think of it.
