I’ve been perfectly happy with my Toshiba Satellite. It’s not a flashy machine, but it gets the job done.
I bought it solely because it came with 2 years manufacturer’s warranty. Smartest thing I ever did - their service is terrific.
Since the OP is looking for shared experiences, let’s move this to IMHO.

IMO, you cannot beat the quality and performance of a Mac Book Pro.
I’ve had excellent results with my Lenovo Thinkpad T61. I bought it because of the consumer ratings.
While we’re here: does anyone own a good touchscreen laptop? I’m looking into getting one of those, with all the cool stuff Windows 7 can do.
As for my opinion: I can only tell you what not to get: a Dell. Or the aforementioned Macbook Pro, if you want to run Windows. The drivers for the builtin hardware suck.
I would suggest just going to WalMart. You may have to copy some numbers from the store display and come back home and look up the specs.
My spouse had similar needs and yesterday found similar prices on Toshiba, HP and Dell. Finding the specs comparable and the prices comparable she went with HP because it had the full 101 keypad. Others might find the larger keypad a disadvantage. In this case looking at the actual three side by side was a useful shopping experience.
i appreciate your guys’ input.
I like the Lhasa Apso, for a laptop.
Any laptops that don’t come preloaded with a bunch of crap programs I don’t want? I just want Windows. I can add what I want later.
Acer is supposed to be the best bang for your buck right now.
