Can anyone tell me how to sync a cell phone with a palm pilot?

I am in the market for a cell phone. I have managed to go this long w/o one but am finally giving in.

I am looking at verizon, att, cnet, etc. to get information about different plans and different phones. The one thing I cannot seem to figure out is if and how cell phones sync with palm pilots. I have about 500 or so names in my palm and wouldn’t imagine getting a cell phone that woudln’t sync up to it. I am not manually typing the information over. And when I change data (say a friend moves and has a new phone #) I only want to do it once. The info should sync from my palm, to my phone, to my thinkpad for work, and my desktop at home.

Anybody have a cell that they use w/ their palm? With all the palm users out there it is odd that I cannot find any info on this.

BTW, I am not interested in the Kyocera (or other models) palm/phones in one. I already have a palm, and want my phone to be small. I don’t need to be able to enter data into the phone, just read it (and dial it, of course).

what you’re essentially looking for is :

  1. http://www.fusionone.com

looks like they’ve removed the link for new user sign up, but here’s a link to their software…it’s a free download…perhaps once you install it, the software might give you an option to sign up for a new account. Looks like they’re moving from single users to enterprise users.

FusionOne basically synchronizes your Palm, Desktop Home/Office, Laptop and cellphone.

  1. Use a Palm software that synchronizes the Palm address book with any infra-red enabled cell phone. Note that this option only synchronizes the address book, but it is what you need. All your 500 (provided your new phone has the capacity to store that many addresses) will be transferred from your Palm to your cell phone. You can choose to sync it with sim card memory or phone memory.

One software to do this is GSMTool.

If you find that GSMTool doesn’t work too well with your cell phone let me know, i’ll suggest some other software.

they seem to offer similar services to option 1, but since i have not used their services, i’m not sure how good it it. But it looks like a good option.

  1. Some phones come with Phone to Desktop Synchronization software CDs. They hook up to the Desktop/Laptop through a cable and the phone book data can be transferred. Nokia used to offer a software called PhoneSync for this. Motorola also offered/offers software to do this. Ask when you purchase your particular model of cell phone.

  2. I know you say you do not want this, but if you have the money, go in for the Handspriing Treo 270. www.handspring.com

If you still have problems on this issue feel free to post on the board or reach me at palm@notcomguys.com for any Palm related queries. I run the Indian Palm User Group ( http://www.notcomguys.com/palm ) which offers technical support and service to any Palm user around the world.

I have a Nokia 3360 to which I can beam information directly from my Handspring Visor. Is this the idea you’re looking for?

Yes! Good info from both of you. Thanks. I will start researching the links you suggest.

D’oh! A double post!

I have a Sony Clié N770 and a Nokia 8210e which has an infra red port and I can beam address entries straight to the phone (they turn up as ‘business cards’) - the reverse is also possible.

Debaser, basically what Mangetout and oceans_11 have suggested works well if you want to transfer a few addresses. If you want to transfer 500 that would be mighty tedious to do manually. Option 2 that i suggested earlier essentially automates this same process allowing you to send and receive addresses in one batch.

and i forgot to post the direct link of option 1 … strangely i can’t seem to find a link to it from the home page anymore… but once i login i get it… i think they’ve stopped accepting new users… not sure…

My Nokia 3360 will transfer names and numbers to my Palm but IIRC I think it’s a “one at a time” transfer option only.
