Can debit card purchases be tracked just like credit card purchases?

I recently applied for a job that required a complete background check, wherein I had to fill out a permission form for release of my personal information with whomever. I also have recently learned that a person’s credit card info can be unearthed by an investigator who has your Social-Security number.

I don’t have a credit card, so I’m not worried about that. What I’m wondering is whether they can do the same with a debit card that you’ve used as a credit card? It’s not that I have so much to hide, I just am pretty sure I don’t want my bank account information looked up at random by anyone with access to my Social Security number.

A debit card is an electronic transaction. Records are kept, if only for a short time.

Depending upon the depth of the background check, yes.

Yes, they can. I recently disputed a debit card transaction that happened some time ago.
