If Dr. Blasey’s allegation is true, the assault and Judge Kavanaugh’s denial of it mean that he should not be seated on the U.S. Supreme Court. But even if the credibility of the allegation has not been established beyond a reasonable doubt and even if further investigation is warranted to determine its validity or clear Judge Kavanaugh’s name, we recognize that this nomination is no longer in the best interests of the country.

So the truth doesn’t matter starting with the lack of evidence an assault occurred in the first place.

Why can’t they just pick another rich white male catholic who graduated from Yale law school who is going to overturn Roe vs Wade? I’m sure there are hundreds if not thousands of other candidates who have similar qualifications, belong to a similar demographic, and will rule a similar way. I think part of it is that they want to ‘own the libs,’ and losing a battle like this is being owned, rather than doing the owning. Even in their own heads, they can’t turn a loss (if it should come to that) into a win. Especially with as much psychic investment as they’ve already put into this battle. So they’ve got to win, which means they can’t back down.

The NY Times did a fact checkof Kavanaugh’s testimony and found it wanting. Including multiple examples of explanations that his classmates are openly refuting as lies.

The call for investigation is Flake, on behalf of himself, Murkowski and Collins as a bloc, punting to the FBI to give them cover to vote yes on the floor. Nobody, dems included, thinks the FBI is gonna come up with anything new. You can pretend it is the result of some sort of bipartisan truth seeking or rational thought or getting yelled at in an elevator, but it’s not.

I don’t really want Kavanaugh on the court, but I liked that he hollered back. More witnesses should do that. Highly publicized hearings are just grandstanding exercises where the witnesses are told to just be nice, take their beatin’ and go home and they’ll end up getting what they wanted, everybody gets what they want. There’s nothing special about senators, they may play-act deference to each other most of the time, but they’re craven shitbags just like everybody else.

I gather they’re referring to the obvious fact that his ranting screed before the committee establishes beyond a reasonable doubt that he lacks the judicial temperament to judge a dog show.

Or cover to vote no, or maybe the FBI will turn up something that gets Trump to pull the nomination, or gets Kavanaugh to withdraw. The latter is what I expect they (and Heitkamp and Manchin on the Dem side) are hoping for.

Are you kidding? There are so many obvious lines of inquiry that I could organize an investigation myself, given the resources. And I’m sure the FBI can bring a lot more game to this than I ever could.

I could care less where it comes from. This needs as thorough and as impartial an investigation as can be managed, and the FBI, whatever faults they may have with respect to partiality, is the best we can throw into this.

Yeah, conspiracy theories about the Clintons, hints of revenge, and a plateful of easily exposed lies, are exactly what we’re looking for in a prospective Supreme Court Justice. :rolleyes:

The term “preaching to the choir”, comes to mind, but it’s not a good fit.
Have you read right leaning sites? I did. They loved his performance. They think it shows he should be confirmed. And it’s their pressure which matters to those who make the decision.

That’s what I figure too. We all got to see solid evidence of that in real time - and in this YouTube age, we can all roll tape and see it again any time we want.

That hearing yesterday should be the death knell on the ridiculous idea you can work with conservatives. They have been waging total political war for decades while the other side and the political media has been trying to pretend everything is fine and polite.

Every GOP member is one criticism or accusation from going full Trump as we saw with Kavanaugh. The idea that they aren’t all the same sort of person is a lie. The McCain funeral where all of ours leader got together to push a false reality looks even more loathsome as time goes on.

I won’t make you; we know they’re there. The fact that 48 Senators still apparently think he should be on the Supreme Court after Thursday is a testament to the feelings of the GOP base.

I agree there’s no convincing the roughly 35% of the population that will stick with Trump through thick and thin. But our arguments aren’t aimed at them. They’re aimed at people who can still see that on Thursday, he embraced a blatantly partisan world view, told repeated lies, and embraced a nutso conspiracy theory about the Clintons.
