Can dogs be retarded? (no really?)

Let me first apologize for using the un PC word retarded but anyway…

The dog next door to me is nice enuff but he looks stupid. I mean if he was a cartoon he would have a big “Duh?” over his head.

He will bark at you like he’s gonna kill you but his tail is wagging a mile a minute. All he does if you’re with him is want to kiss you. I tried to get him to play pull the rag and he didn’t know how? I mean I’ve never known a dog not to like that game.

(it’s the one where you pull the rag and the dog has it in his mouth and pulls it back)

Like I said he is very nice but he just in so many ways acts like he should be taking that special little school bus…

yeah its called inbreeding or over breeding. alot of dalmations are deaf and some blind due to this

Here’s a related question. Not

Can dogs be nearsighted or farsighted? Not necessarily blond, but can they have the same sort of physical deformities with their eyes like humans?

If so, I bet the guy who figures out how to diganose them and perform doggie LASIK is going to make a bindle from goofy devoted pet owners.

jonny I think your on to something, maybe the dogs a blonde.

watch what you say
or they’ll be calling
you a radical,
a liberal,fanatical
a criminal…

My former SO of manny years was a breeder and handler of show dogs. Over the years I (not really a pooch person) got to observe several generations of the same breeds go by. Yes, they do vary. Some had better eyesight than others. Some had weird hair. Some were downright smart and some were slow and we had one who really should’ve been on that special little school bus.

And, not being a pet person, I was surprised at the veterinary technology that is available to the owner who cares. I don’t know about LASIK, but surgery for cataracts is common, as well as various plastic surgeries (testicle implants, anyone?).

Sure, since they’re warm blooded mammals they can be retarded. Lack of oxygen, inbreeding, etc. can cause problems. But it’s tricky assuming on behavior with dogs.

Ferocious barking with tail wagging can also mean a dog that’s starved for attention and play. The pack socialization wasn’t there, but the instincts haven’t waned. It’s possible to want/fear something at the same time. Could be the dog just wants to be a dog: run, play, tussle and find his place in the pecking order but none of it’s been provided.

Hey, so sue me. I love dogs. Most of them are wonderful companions if given the chance. But then again, I’m a total pushover for glorious mutts.

Off to stroke silky ears,
Veb
