As you noted in your answer, Michael Vernaglia did indeed die of AIDS despite having undergone extracorporeal hyperthermia. Chuck DeMarco, who was his companion and executor, survived him and continued to credit that treatment for rendering him HIV-free. Chuck claimed to be HIV-free owing to the hyperthermia and managed to garner the attention of (among others) then Senator Lautenburg of New Jersey (where both Michael and Chuck resided) and make it into the newspapers occasionally. However, Chuck (with whom I worked in administering Michael’s estate) himself died of AIDS 4-5 years ago – about 3 years after Michael. I’m afraid their experience provides little validation for extracorporeal hyperthermia as an AIDS treatment.
