Can I do my own taxes using the Irs.gov website?

Even though I have paid no US taxes in 40 years (I live in Canada and get the foreign tax credit) I am still required to file a return every year. I tried software one year, but it insisted my wife pay social security taxes on her business income even though she is exempt by treaty (but the software was not programmed to recognize that and added it automatically).

I got my reward in the form a check for $600 from the US government. I figured that that meant I was getting about $10 an hour for all the time I spent on utterly useless tax returns.

Other than that I always fill out my own taxes (Quebec and Canadian) using paper forms. Somehow I always miss or misfigure something and usually get a small refund (with interest that is supposed to be declared, but they never send me an information form and I always forget to do that.

California, too. They figured it was cheaper than having people send in paper forms.
