And then, after they come out and replace your fraudulently insured windshield, they’ll go back to their little adding machine and figure out that they need to raise rates to cover the costs of these scams and we all get screwed for your “free” windshield. Thank you very much.

Insurance companies aren’t all that dumb. Sometimes new coverage is conditional for the first 30 days, and they might investigate. Try that scheme and get caught and your insurance woes are just beginning.
Correction: tempered glass isn’t used in the windshield. The side windows (and maybe the rear, not sure) are tempered, and will shatter. If the windshield were tempered, I don’t think you’d ever see a car with an intact windshield during a Colorado winter.
When I was in Utah my oficemate had his windshield drilled to stop the crack propagation. IIRC, he had a professional do it.
Last year, I had a crack on my window. I had the windshield replaced.
