Can I feed orange peels to my lemon tree?

Hi,

If I grind up orange peels in a food processor, can I feed the resulting mush to my lemon tree that is about three feet high and is in a 10" pot? I know that citrus peels are loaded with vitamins and stuff, but they’re also really acidic – will this be too much if it’s mixed in with the soil?

Each big orange results in about ten tablespoons-full once it’s all ground up, so I’m wondering if maybe I should just give her a couple here and there to avoid overdoing it.

Thanks for any help.

Wouldn’t this lead to citrine spongiform encephalopathy?

Seriously, citrus trees are rather used to their own fruit falling about it’s trunk and refertilizing itself. So, I’d lay money on that it would be a-ok.

Peace.

You really ought to compost them before adding them to the soil because the process of decomposition will steal nutrients from the plant and adding them fresh might attract insects (that are more likely to annoy you than actually damage the plant).

However, citrus trees do like their compost on the acid side, so adding the composted remains to the pot may not be a bad idea. You can’t compost them in a worm bin though.
