Can I focus a blurry TV?

My TV is rather blurry. Others have noticed it. Can it be focused by a professional?

Probably, depending on exactly why it’s blurry. If it’s a standard CRT TV, there is a Focus control on the flyback transformer, along with the Screen Voltage control. Sometimes this is accessible from the rear without taking the case off, but more often than not, the rear case must be removed to get to it. If you have a good idea of what’s inside a TV and what NOT to to touch, you can do it yourself, using a nonconductive tool, such as available at Radio Shack and other places. If you are clueless in this regard, I recommend you leave it to a professional. There are potentially lethal voltages inside any TV set, even if it’s unplugged.

Yes, that would be me…

It really only matters when I watch a football game. And the season is almost over. Maybe I’ll wait until next year. Maybe at that time my finances will be such that I can use it as an excuse to get a big flat-screen.

But maybe not.

It is also possible that the focus is adjustable in an on screen display (OSD). Very new TVs are almost entirely adjustalbe by OSD. The OSD is generally accessed via the remote control using a particular key sequence. Just for giggles, post the make and model of your TV and I’ll see if I can find out for sure.

Cool thanks!

It is at least 4 years old and probably was actually bought in mid 2000.

It is a Samsung and the back of the TV says the model number is:
TXJ3678

I have a Samsung, as well. If it’s anything like mine, to get into the OSD service mode, turn the TV off. Then, using the remote, enter <MUTE><1><8><2><POWER>. Mine doesn’t seem to have the Focus adjustment–it’s older than yours–so I’m not sure what the abbreviation will be. It does have the Screen Voltage (SCR) adjustment. I imagine Focus will be something like FCS or FOC. If you don’t see anything which might be it, don’t fool with it. Turn the TV off, then back on to return to normal mode.

The sequence of keys as described by you works. There was nothing like FCS or FOC. I should have listened and not fooled around further. :frowning:

Luckily I didn’t do anything that I couldn’t undo. I seem to have it back to where it was. Thanks for the advice!
