Can I freeze bananas?

Oh, now we’re talking!
Pulls out blender

No, the freezing bursts the cells and results in mush on thawing, like any fruit. Sealing them in any way doesn’t affect this.

By a weird coincidence I just made banana bread today. It’s still hot! And at the end of the recipe is a hint for when you just aren’t in the mood for doing the banana bread right now: “Mash overripe bananas with a bit of lemon juice or Fruit Fresh [I do not know what Fruit Fresh is but someone here might] and freeze until you’re ready to make banana bread.”

Fruit Fresh is a product which is intended for use on bananas, apples, etc. to keep them from turning brown. It can also be used when making coleslaw.
My mother peels her bananas before she freezes them and tosses frozen bananas in the blender with milk or yoghurt or ice cream and some other fruit to make shakes/smoothies.

No you can’t - it is impossible to freeze democracy, the colour mauve or that peculiar feeling that you’re going to sneeze.

Whoa. I mean, whoa, man. That’s so … whoa. :stuck_out_tongue:

Even if we’re talking about tangible objects, soap bubbles cannot be frozen.

Also, a plane on a treadmill will not freeze.

Apparently, they can if you use the correct method: Make Frozen Bubbles
(although I’ve never tested that, personally)

But will a frozen plane on a treadmill take off?

You’d think there would be a photo somewhere.

Is the treadmill also frozen? How about the goat and the squid?

It’s just acetic acid (vitamin C.) It stops the chemical reaction (oxisation) that leads to browning. This is also why when making an apple pie or some such, you put the apple slices in water with lemon juice. And lime juice in guacamole keeps it from turning brown, as well as adding flavor.

Check foodtv.com for Alton Brown’s banana episode - I seem to recall that freezing bananas was integral to one one of the things he prepared.

Okay, this is officially the coolest thing on the internet today.

Anyone know where to get dry ice?

Banana ice cream.

That IS cool. I was hoping that maybe someone had filmed it and put out a youtube video. No joy there though

I’m thinking good project for next year’s Gettysdope.

You can probably buy it locally, rather easily; look in your Yellow Pages, or try Googling for local sources. I’ve bought it for work purposes before, although I could actually get some from work, now.

To avoid derailing this thread any more, I posted this thread in MPSIMS with the NewScientist link I got that from. There’s an interesting comment on that blog, too, about an ice cream recepie using liquid nitrogen.

“My friend asked me if I wanted a frozen banana, I said ‘No, but I’ll want a regular banana later, so…yeah.’” - Mitch Hedberg

Dip them in chocolate and freeze them. Icy cold heavenly delicious treats will ensue.
