Can I Freeze Cheese?

Philly freezes well. I have done it for years,
Also, Velveeta. (I know, it’s not really gourmet, but I like, so there)

For your average deli cheese, I’d say somewhere in the $5-$6/lb range when not on sale, and $3-$4/lb when on sale. We’re talking your basic brands like Sorrento, Land O Lakes, Kretschmar, etc. Usually there is at least one brand of cheese on sale for $3/lb at my local deli. This week it was Kretschmar American Cheese. Last week it was some brand of Munster cheese (maybe Dutch Farms?). The week before it was Sorrento Provolone. All for $2.99/lb.

So, not much difference, really.

Nah, pretty much the same.

One alternative could be to give it to a friend, who will then gift you with new cheese in the future, when you can enjoy it.

I know butter is fine frozen, then thawed. I only buy butter around the holidays, when the stores use it as a loss-leader. I’ll buy their limit (usually 4 Lbs per day) for a few days in a row and store it in our chest freezer, then move a pound at a time to the refrigerator as needed. My wife would not tolerate that if there was a problem with the butter. I would expect cream cheese to behave similar to butter.

Interesting. I just checked the Tops that I sometimes shop at, and they have 2.5 lbs of shredded cheese on for $10. This was the only cheese on the flyer, but generally the shredded stuff is more expensive than the block cheese. Search the Niagara Falls boulevard flyer if you don’t believe me.

I have an addiction to Jarlsberg, which is about 60% the price in the USA compared to Canada. I basically live on the border and my wife is American. Trust me, I pay close attention to what’s a deal and not.

That is kind of my plan as electricity will be cut off except for a freezer in the garage during my absence. Great ideas from everyone!

Good to know. Thanks. And despite Velveeta’s disdain, it comes in handy when cheap and hungry kiddos are combined.

We adults keep the good stuff to ourselves.

I don’t find Velveeta cheap around here. I recently paid $7.99 on sale.

The Aldi brand is about half that price. It tastes fine, and melts well, but it is hard to slice (sticky) and the packaging is odd–under the normal foil is a layer of plastic wrap, wax paper or something. It makes it harder to use neatly.
