What’s a good GPS navigation app for Android? I have Google Navigation installed but you can’t change points on the route on that, and I don’t really like the route it’s giving me for the drive to our vacation spot. FREE is a must…I don’t have any discretionary funds that aren’t going to be needed for vacation.
So, what I’m looking for:
Android GPS navigation app
with the ability to change the route to your specs
and free
Thank you…installed and downloading maps and such now. The 7-day thing doesn’t matter to me…we’ll be there and back by then. I’ll make a decision about buying full license after that.
I was in the same boat as you, but ultimately settled on using Google Maps and the GPS application it provides. After using it for a while I have concluded that while not perfect it is heads and shoulders above my Tom Tom. The maps are always up to date and I like the ability to search for a destination using the internet.
The one thing I wanted is what you apparently can’t do with Google Maps’ GPS navigator: Change a route at single points. For instance, my trip tomorrow is to Danvers, MA. The routes that Google Maps Navigator has available for me ALL go across the Geo.Washington Bridge and through the Bronx. I so desparately want to avoid that…and also avoid driving through the Boston snarl. But I can’t change the routes to avoid those with Google Maps, as far as I’ve been able to discover. With Sygis, apparently, I can change points on the route like I can with Google Maps on the Web, so I can, say, move the route point at the GW Bridge to go over the Hudson on the Tappan Zee instead, and avoid the whole metro mess.
Yeah - I didn’t find anything to improve on that. The one thing I wish (and I’m not the only one): you can create a customized map on your desktop, and send the link to your phone - and it can display it there…
but there is not, as yet, any way to make the GPS / turn-by-turn voice instructions follow that map.
The other thing that annoys me: I have several times had it change routes on me, some time after I’ve left and when I can’t see the screen. As in I’m tootlin along with one route, get an instruction “exit here” or whatever… think “that doesn’t sound familiar”… check my original plans and yep, it’s decided a different route for no reason. Several times, that route has included a U-turn and backtracking. WTF???
I’m on the road a lot and have relied on my Tom Tom for years. Got an iPhone in June and wanted to find a suitable GPS app. Tom Tom makes one that sells for $50 (no thank you). I tried several that cost between $5 and $10, and found them all lacking. Each one either got me lost or gave me needlessly complex routes.
About two weeks ago I stumbled on the free MapQuest app, and I’m here to say it’s fantastic. It has no problem recalculating routes on the fly, and even better, you can build routes or make a list of locations online and then login to your account through the phone to access them. It has some other cool features, too – I’d pay money for it.
And don;t take my word for it. Test them out. Download some apps and try them out by driving through your neighborhood.
